1968 was a famously big shitstorm for world events but a pretty good year for music, though not nearly as memorable as the previous years. At this point psychedelia has infiltrated the whole entire mainstream music spectrum. Everything from pop to rock to folk to soul is either psychedelic or sunshiny. And out of this mixing and matching, you get brandnew trends that would go on to become influential on their own, like hard rock out of psychedelic rock and funk out of psychedelic soul. There was also a lot of easy listening hits this year too for some reason. Maybe meant as a break from all the pop weirdness going on?
1. Simon and Garfunkel - "Scarborough Fair/Canticle" (This sounds like a paradise scene with singing angels painted in Medieval times) 2. Marvin Gaye - "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" 3. Aretha Franklin - "Think" 4. Mason Williams - "Classical Gas" 5. The Beatles - "Hey Jude"
6. Bee Gees - "Words" 7. Tommy James and the Shondells - "Crimson and Clover" 8. Paul Mauriat and His Orchestra - "Love Is Blue (L'amour est bleu)" 9. Blue Cheer - "Summertime Blues" (Holy hell, this is so fuzzy and heavy that it's basically metal) 10. The Doors - "Hello, I Love You"
11. Diana Ross and the Supremes - "Love Child" 12. Big Brother and the Holding Company - "Piece of My Heart" 13. Simon and Garfunkel - "Mrs. Robinson" 14. Otis Redding - "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" 15. Small Faces - "Lazy Sunday" (Super British, but charmingly dumb)
16. Sly and the Family Stone - "Dance to the Music" 17. Merrilee Rush and the Turnabouts - "Angel of the Morning" 18. Iron Butterfly - "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" 19. Archie Bell and the Drells - "Tighten Up" 20. Ohio Express - "Yummy Yummy Yummy" (Hey, shut up, I love this dumb piece of cheese)
