Very true 2000-2001 period overall lacked soul but I’ll give it credit for being slightly old school, closer to the Y2k era and late 90s and having some decent things. But I totally agree, something was missing during that time, I would even say that a lot of y2k things get wrongly lumped in with that period and in some cases misrepresented because of it. Technically while I’m not a big fan of the latter 2000s an arguement could be made that a year like 2008 was insanely better time to live in. I think you could be right, like when looking at stuff from 2000 it just has this auto pilot vibe, I think it REALLY started to feel like this shortly after Pokemon the movie 2000 came out and it had all these faux Nsync groups doing the soundtrack there weren't nsync or backstreet but they were like clone boy bands thats when I knew the fad had jumped the shark. When I started seeing y2k font on water bottles from Ocean Spray I knew it was ending lol 100% agree. I would say Jan to March/April 2000 is the best part of that year 2000, literally just a continuation winter 99. May to August and when things slowly start getting as you described but it’s not in full swing yet. September 2000 onwards is when the cringe parts was mostly in full effect, imo, with some decent things.

I was so bored of Pokemon by the time that I stopped watching the tv show (around the time Johto started) If it wasn't for toonami and Malcolm in the middle I prob would have went insane.

The real Y2K vibe was gone after spring 2000. 2000-2001 was like a cake without frosting.

I remember getting more into 80s cartoons and deeper into older gaming at this time because I didn’t feel there were that many interesting things coming out. Dreamcast is probably the coolest thing from this period then again it was kind of dying then lol

Maybe the real Y2K vibe was gone after winter 1999/2000 since in March 2000, the dotcom bubble burst & Bush got elected that fall as president. I hear that the 2000 election was very similar to the 2016 election in the sense that they were very close, yet difficult elections. Jan to March was firmly and totally Y2K. March is partially winter as well, April was like March, there were barely any differences. May was just barely starting to feel different but mostly Y2K. think it fair to include late March to early May. It takes number of factors to shift the spirit not just one. I remember it feeling Y2K. It’s safe to say it was transitioning after spring or during some point in late spring. You could remove May, possibility, April and late March seems a bit hardcore imo.

2000 was an optimistic year with almost no problems aside from the Bush 43 election crisis and Dot Com Bubble. It was a peaceful world and the Y2K Era was at its Pinnacle.
2020 on the other hand is disastrous, Covid-19 and BLM riots defined this year, and while there are good music released as well as a few movies, it's nowhere near as happy as 1999/2000 especially when depression/suicide rates have increased due to the pandemic lockdowns and the fear of caution.
I guess I ate my words again lol

I think people misread the OP. There was a lot of hype for the new millennium in the late 1990s. People really thought the 21st century would bring world peace, life on space colonies, and simply be perfect. The disappointment was of course huge.
I feel like the year 2000 itself wasn't a disappointment though. The optimism shattering part of the 2000s didn't really start until 2001-2003.
There wasn't much hype for 2020 though, or at least I don't remember any. The late 2010s––the era preceding it––unlike the late 1990s, was very gloomy. It's funny how we went in with low/realistic expectations and were still disappointed lol.
I would say they're not similar simply because there was no/little hype for the 2020s (unlike the 2000s) and it still managed to be a disaster.

I think a lot of people deep down had an icky feeling about 2020 even going in. Something about this year just seems...cursed. I know I was hoping for the best but was worried. I blame Donald Trump for the gloominess of the late 2010s. The entire era was one big "f*ck you" response to the Obama years from the religious right. For me, it was hard not always being on edge because anybody with sense knew that if even the smallest crisis happened on this guy's watch, it would turn into a catastrophe that would change the country and world. That is exactly what has happened in 2020. I'm actually surprised it took this long and that it didn't end up being a nuclear war with North Korea back in 2017. Funny how Republicans always have a way of destroying optimism and bringing mass misery on society every time they get into power.
