2006 would have to be my least favourite year for music out of my childhood. Rock was caught in this awkward transitional period where pop-punk had mostly disappeared off the charts, but emo had yet to fully take its place (at least not until the very end of the year). As a result, the rock music from that year was mostly defined by crappy "Idol"-pop rock and post-grunge. The reason as for why Green Day and the Red Hot Chili Peppers managed to achieve such a huge amount of success can arguably be contributed to the rest of the rock world being in such a dismal state. Sure, 2006 may have been the year that My Chemical Romance's The Black Parade was released (which is a genuinely great album), however it didn't come out until September and the album's success carried over into 2007 anyway.
The pop music that was on the charts during 2006 generally wasn't any better, ranging from downright 'bottom of the barrel' stuff like "London Bridge" and "Flaunt It", to simply bland and musically uninspiring releases such as "Love Generation" and "Crazy". Most of it just isn't too my liking whatsoever. I don't mind "Maneater" by Nelly Furtado, but as for anything else? Forget it.

"Dani California" - Red Hot Chili Peppers 10. "Joker & The Thief" - Wolfmother
11. "Chasing Cars" - Snow Patrol 12. "Who Knew" - P!nk 13. "I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair)" - Sandi Thom 14. "I Love It" - Sneaky Sound System 15. "Come On Come On" - Little Birdy 16. "Woman" - Wolfmother 17. "Watching You" - Rogue Traders 18. "Maneater" - Nelly Furtado 19. "Hey Oh" - Red Hot Chili Peppers 20. "One Crowded Hour" - Augie March
