I voted 09. 2009 felt like the world ended on some ish. Late 2008 and 2009 felt a lot like 2020 with their apocalyptic vibe, though not as bad. It was just bad news after bad news. The fact that black was a common colour people wore, a common colour for electronics and that summer 2009 was so rainy/cloudy doesn't help, it literally feels like the "darkest"

My vote is 2007 cuz emo & crunk were everywhere, economy started tanking, social media & tech blows up with iPhone. btw crunk was not really a thing anymore in 2007

btw crunk was not really a thing anymore in 2007 Whoops my bad. Is it cuz 50 cent lost 2 Kanye West's Graduation album? No, 50 Cent wasn't crunk. Crunk died in Mid 2005 and was replaced by "Snap" rap in Late 2005, which then died out in Mid 2007, replaced by Autotune pop rap like T-Pain. In Early 2006, "Snap Yo Fingers" by Lil Jon came out which was like a mix of both. On topic, my vote goes to either 2001 for 9/11 or 2008 for the recession. I really can't decide on the two, because while 9/11 was much worse than the recession, it didn't happen until the late part, while the recession lasted all through 2008 and got worse as the year went on.

I do feel like 2003 had a dark or dim, more serious undertone. btw crunk was not really a thing anymore in 2007 Agreed, Crunk was more 2003 - 2005 really. Nah, Crunk was 2003 - 2004, but you can trace its peak origin to 2002.

2009 felt kinda dystopian all the closed down stores in the mall co existing with the left over DNA of the 2000s added to this dystopian vibe + the Cognitive dissonance of electropop while all this F*ckery was going on
