Early 2007 would've been when emo bands like My Chemical Romance were still in their prime, so I can agree with you there. Personally, I think, in terms of pop culture, that 2000-2001, and 2004-2007 were the darkest periods, with 2002-2003 and 2008-2009 being more lighthearted. Both eras are represented by two very dark and angsty music genres, nu metal and emo. 2002-2003 I think was a sort of escapist reaction against the tumultuous times we were experiencing, so movies, music, and video games became more lighthearted during that time. But then people got sick of that, and combined with the rise of emo and the introspective social media platform Myspace, things went dark again in 2004. And then in 2007, emo suffered a major backlash and you got scene, which was all about neon colors and happy music. The rise of scene in 2007 is the main reason why I personally consider 2005-2006 darker than 2007, but that's just me. Again, I'm only referring to pop culture rather than current events. I promise you 2000-2001 was not dark at all, it was still the y2k corporate era ( we were months away from leaving the era) u still had teen pop on radio 24/7 and attitudes then even felt lighter, the nu metal that was there was HEAVILY outweighted by teen pop. Like I mentioned here before, there were dumb fads like Razor Scooter, everything commercial on TV had to have teen pop in it, it was way 2 oversaturated, no way in any shape form or fashion was 2000-2001 dark lol, turn on tv and you see... Teen pop On FOX while watching The Simpsons Turn on any channel and you will see PEPSI ads disguised as MTV music videos Late 2001 yes did feel dark ^ but the above videos showcase the accurate vibe of the 2000-2001 school year, this school year is the most cheesiest of the 2000s and the most soul less lol You're not wrong that it was cheesy. There were some cheesy movies and songs from that time. Still I can think of way more examples of dark pop culture from 2000-2001 than 2002-2003. Those were the years of GameCube games, garage rock revival songs, Avril Lavigne, and the peak of SpongeBob. Just compare the tracks off Eminem's The Marshall Matters LP (2000) with The Eminem Show (2002). The latter sounds lighter, and not as edgy as the former.

The culture of the 2000-2001 school year was very y2k, long in the tooth and light very very very light. I was in the 7th grade during this school year I am telling you thats how it was lol, Anything dark was SUPER outweighed by Y2k Teen Pop. Once we get to August 2001 things start getting more mature, Britney has a new mature sound, 9/11 of course, Grand Theft Auto III, Max Payne etc and Pop Punk gets even more popular. In no way or any shape or form or fashion did 2000-2001 feel dark at all, there may have been some nu metal songs and maybe a dark movie or so but it made up of 4% of the pop culture, even the Linkin Park songs that were popular in 2000-2001 ( and Linkin Park blew up during that year)

I don't disagree that 2001 was a more mature and edgier year than what came prior. Think of how Shrek was a reaction against the Disney Renaissance movies, or how Conker's Bad Fur Day is a edgy parody of 5th gen 3D platformers. The 90s was starting to get backlash in 2001, ESPECIALLY the millennial 90s, and people were ready to move on to something else. That's why you had genres that were the opposite of teen pop becoming popular after teen pop died: nu metal, post-grunge, garage rock revival, gangsta rap. All genres that have a hard aggressive sound to them, and are either angsty, hardcore, or self-aware and sarcastic. In a way, it felt like the spirit of the Gen X 90s was coming back in a way.

The backlash had it's first signs in February / March 2001 when this video dropped and the "Full" on reversal of teen pop took place July 2001 when the Y2k era Ended This set the blue print for the rest of the teen pop artists, because this video made teen pop look super wack when it dropped in early 01. I remember being in my bedroom watching this on MTV and thinking "it's a wrap for teen pop"

Yeah, I made several threads you might wanna check out over the last few years detailing how this all went down, the first signs start in Feb/March 2001 when That Lady Marmalade song drops, but I can give you a brief timeline on how this all came together. December 2000 - Think pieces come out online on how Teen Pop is long in the tooth January 2001 - Clinton leaves Office, Bush takes his seat February /March 2001 Britney Pepsi ad airs, Simpson episode with Nsync airs ( tons of hate online in the music community and GP) Lady Marmlade music video drops and gets world wide praise April 2001 - Sum 41 blow up and their music video is spammed to death May 2001 - Nsync's Pop comes out to universal disdain and negative press and lukewarm buzz
July 2001 / August 2001 - Michelle Branch and Shakira both debut and make a huge splash, Backstreet Boys announce Kevin left the group, Jimmy Eat world blow up September 2001 - (several days before 9/11) - Britney Spears debuts a new look at VMAS and ditches teen pop in favor mature Neptunes sound

The Simpsons was not the only cartoon to have teen pop in it during the Y2K era. South Park also had an episode about boy bands, that aired in 2000.
