I choose 2017, the vibe was just dark. The music too if you go back and listen to it, most of it was about hard drugs and depression, either that or the typical bragging about money, cars, women. Not sure why, but it could be that it was the first year of the "Trump era". 2018 and 2019 felt a lot brighter in comparison though.

I went with 2017 as well. Considering how many shootings there were and the political tension caused by our then new president. 2016 is also a close second place behind 2017. I have no idea why 2019 was leading, it wasn't even a bad year or anything.

I picked 2019, was in a abusive relationship, took me 4 months to actually leave( I had Stockholm syndrome) music was bland and Covid-19 was birthed behind the scenes without us knowing.

I assume this thread this thread is meant about the culture of a year rather than our personal lives though. But also bland music and us not knowing about a virus until it made an impact months later doesn't make a year dark.

I still thought it was dark, I also thought Game of Thrones finale and final episodes were dark ( literally could not see it it was so dark) also it sucked. Juice Wrld died which was sad, Nipsey Hussle, Luke Perry etc also blandness of a popculture can also contribute for it being flat dull and not full of light.

Obviously 2016...mass shootings, an unusually high amount of celebrity deaths, contentious presidential furor, BLM protests, etc. But 2020 makes 2016 look like a elementary school project.

2016, which gave rise to all that sucked after it, I'm not sure how this is even in debate.

I picked 2018 because that’s when everyone got used to Trump being the president, Parkland shooting and March for Our Lives happened, emo/SoundCloud rap was at its peak with artists like Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Pump, XXXTENTACION, Juice Wrld, etc. A lot of music sounded pretty dark, especially trap. Even EDM music had a dark vibe to it compared to earlier in the decade (FRIENDS - Marshmello and Happier - Bastille). XXXTENTACION and Mac Miller died that year which felt pretty eerie since they were so young, and people were shocked with what happened in Avengers Infinity War. 2018 felt the darkest to me in a pop culture sense

If there’s any school year in my life that felt dark and depressing, it’s without a doubt 2017-18. I remember that school year having a shooting like every three minutes. Plus you also had songs like “SAD!” and the death of XXXTENTACION and Mac Miller. I would actually have to say 2018 was the darkest year.

The 2015-2017 period. I think I would go with 2017. Terrorist attack every month and then the refugee crisis on top. 2017 had that race riot which makes it an instant no.

Nobody that year could have predicted the disaster that Trump would be. People knew he would be bad but not "completely destroy society as we know it" bad. He has been far worse than even the most pessimistic predictions. It was also the only year since 2013 that I actually kind of liked and that was going better in my personal life. I thought 2018 and 19 were darker, though both were the good ole days compared to 2020.

In hip hop music, songs like "Suge", "Old Town Road" and "Ransom" really represent this well to me. Compare those to 2017 hip hop like "Bodak Yellow", "Bank Account" and "XO Tour Llif3" and you'll see what I mean. It was more downbeat and depressing in 2017, and it got bouncier and somewhat melodic in 2019.

2019 seems to be more upbeat and optimistic compared to 2016-2018.
