I’d have to go with 2017. That year saw many songs having a trap influence which I truly think has a dark sound to it. Songs like XO Tour Lif3 have that dark vibe I get whenever I listen to some trap songs. And not only that but events like the Charlottesville riots, Trump becoming president, multiple hurricanes affecting the U.S. and the Las Vegas country concert shooting really impacted the news that year. 2016 also had some dark moments like the killer clowns and the Orlando nightclub shooting but I think that 2017 was darker. And don’t even get me started on 2020.

I've said it before, but I don't think 2016 was very dark until the late part. Summer 2016 actually felt very upbeat IMO. To me it felt like as soon as October hit the vibe just became dark and that lasted through 2017.

I been saying this 2, def Fall 2016 is when it got dark even a few weeks before Trump got elected but def when he got elected it shifted the atmosphere

The year had just as many shootings though and the political tension ramped up significantly from 2015.

I don't know what to think about 2019. It was a year that I made a lot of personal sacrifices to better myself, which turned out to be all for nothing because 2020 destroyed everything. I have a bitter taste about 2019 looking back at it. If I would have known how things were going to turn out I would have done things differently.

Honestly, it's hard to say, because I believe we have been in a period of social turmoil and unrest since the Boston Bombings in December 2013. 2014 had a darker undertone to it that people don't seem to acknowledge. Don't let Meghan Trainer and the Ice Bucket Challenge make you all believe otherwise. MH370 disappeared without a trace, the year saw the rise of ISIS and lone-wolf terrorist attacks worldwide, MH17 was shot down, Crimea was annexed by Russia, the Ebola crisis spread across the globe and killed thousands. It really wasn't that great of a year in terms of world events. Really, I think the argument could be made for any year between 2014-2019 as having been the "darkest". I personally voted for 2017 for reasons that people have already gave. Also, something else that hasn't yet been mentioned was the tensions between Trump and North Korean leader Kim-Jung-Un during the first-half of 2017. Remember how Trump threatened to direct a missile towards North Korea?
