So, which decade in your opinion produced better films in terms of quality and originality, the 2000s or the 2010s?
I might have to go with the 2000s. I feel while many movies from 2000s especially 2000-2005ish, may have not aged well, there are a lot of really solid thought providing films with more 90s style filmaking approach in certain areas, that is sometimes not really acknowledged espeically in 2000, 2001 (Requim for a Dream, Bully, Crow Salvation, Almost Famous, From Hell) but also to a lesser extent as late as 2004-2005 and tiny bit in 06 (The United States of Leland (03), Lords of Dogtown, Mysterious Skin, Idiocracy) . While generic or cookie cutter teen, horror, action films along with poor and excessive use of CGI, and the start of medicore remakes and some vapid superhero films (not all) can sometimes be regarded as weak point in cinema history during this decade, you still had pretty informative documentaries, genre defying movies like Walking life and Kill Bill and decent trilogies like the Lord of rings, Matrix, Star Wars and a few others. Also years like 2008-2009 seem to have an ambitious energy behind a number of films with titles like Hangover, Dark Knight, Avatar and Watchmen which seem to not only set a new standard but also seem to be more present around this time compared to later with the exception of some films in the 2010s Star Wars series, Dark Knight Rises, Aladdin and Joker among a number of others at different points in the decade. Also there was a healthy underground movie scene and was blooming, a physical dvd renting and collecting aspect up until 2009/2009 and going to the cinema was more affordable and a bit more exciting also due to the lack of netflix, and perfect HD anywhere and everywhere among other factors.
I think the 2010s brought us a wider variety of choices in general and a some general filmmaking improvements (some improvements over the cheesy 00s CGI, interesting use of 3D glasses, more exploration and more progressive/left leaning influences, more convenient technology etc) at various points but the what I feel takes away the decade, is an oversaturation of mediocre sequels, too many contrived, soulness or marketing based superhero movies, forced 80s remakes,3D gimmicks, too much pseudo political correctness and lack of intellectual or risky films like jackass the movie or team america or the micheal moore documentaries. Also cinema going was gradually loosing its spark as early as 2009-2010 to the present, due to pricing but also experiences being challenged by digital content and other factors. Also the element of renting or collecting dvds was also a satisfying and more experiential ritual that was largely slowly dying.
Then again I found movies like star wars the force awakens, mad max, and lion king to be really solid steps towards better approach to films despite some having mixed reviews. So the 2010s does have pros.
