This is something that I have given a lot of thought to since i'm turning 22 in two months time. Personally, i'm not in the position to even think about renting, let alone moving out of home and putting a deposit on a house. At this point, I will be lucky if I can afford to move out of home before I am 25. Most of the people who I went to school with seem to be in a similar position. All of my friends are still living at home. Two of my cousins have since moved out, but my 20 yr old one is splitting the rent with a friend and his friend's girlfriend, while my 23 yr old one is now facing the prospect of having to move back home since the house he was renting (with his girlfriend and her Mum) has now been sold.
To be honest, I don't believe there is a 'set age' by which someone should move out of their parents house, although there is definitely still a stigma if you happen to still be living at home after a certain age. The cut-off point seems to be around age 30 or so.
What are your thoughts on this?

I was never allowed to leave home and only got my freedom after my mother died.

I guess whenever you want. If you're willing to have roommates you can move out earlier. If you're not financially stable and your parents don't bother you, then don't.

Most rentals here are between $400-$500 a week.

Depends. Some parents are more strict about decisions like that and then there is some who are relaxed about it. If you ask me if you want to go to a college far away from your parents home, that means you basically are moving out of your house and adapting to a new life on your own or going into the military after graduation. There's no exact age you have to move out of the house.

If you care about long term affects (like finances and debt) then don't move out until you're financially stable. If you care about short term affects (like partying and social status among peers) then during your early to mid twenties (21-26).

Whenever you feel like it, though savor as much time as you can with your family while you still can. In the end, they are the only group you can trust a lot more than anyone else you will ever meet.
