Namely, I'm talking about friends who you played any number of multiplayer games with - people you met through those games - who you haven't heard from in years and who you miss. I know I have a number of those I've made over the years, and there's sort of a unique sadness to one day being told "brb" or "g2g" and not realizing until too late that that's the last you'll hear from them.
Here are a couple of the friends I made and lost over the years (this is very much the abridged version, and I’m sure some of you can relate):
StarCraft: Brood War Firious-Rage: A friend I made through playing a StarCraft custom RPG map or something, he and I started bonding over RP maps (which were kind of a different thing, much more creative where all players are basically DMs). We were in the middle of a roleplay when he said he had chores or something, and then I never heard from him again. That was, like, 18 years ago. Kind of insane to think it was so long ago, and that I still remember him after all this time.
-=Neo_China=-: Another of my RP friends, and probably the one that left the biggest impression on me as a middle schooler. I think his username was based on G Gundam, where there were all those champions like Neo Tokyo and Neo Hong Kong. He had a catchphrase, “Never be normal!” I used it for my 8th grade graduation yearbook quote (yes, I was an odd one).
Half-Life 2: Deathmatch TetsuoShima: He and I used to play on the then-famed RATZ team deathmatch server, and we used to abuse the shit out of the server sounds, so much so that the admin removed the sounds we were abusing. But hey, we had fun. Then Team Fortress 2 was released and I never saw him again.
I'd love to hear all of your stories. Feel free to discuss and commiserate.

Yeah sure. Not really long stories though.
I made quite a few gaming friends through playing on the ole MSN Gaming Zone (mainly for AoE 2 1v1's and team games) back around 2004-05. Sadly, lost contact with all of them many years ago.
There was this other guy who went under the username "Stickylabel" on a certain media forum I used frequent up until recently that struck up a conversation with me through mutual interests in 2006, he created and invited me to join this awesome retro gaming forum (though him being a huge Nintendo fan at the time that made top discussions heavily based around their consoles and games). Unfortunately the forum didn't last due various reasons like offline commitments, lost interest, lack of overall activity etc. I can't remember what happened now but lost contact with him not long after.

I wish I had something more interesting to share. I've never actually made any online friends through gaming. That isn't too say I have never played online multiplayer with anyone, but because I've never been that much of a gamer in general, there hasn't actually been a time where I've become friends with people in a server who I have never met in real life. It probably doesn't help that I don't use a headset though. Actually speaking with the other people in the server would go a long way. It makes you wonder what actually happens to these people when you've lost all contact with them. It's not as if they would lose interest in the game in the days, weeks or even months after you've last messaged them, so its strange how the friendships can just end so abruptly.
