What’s so special about December 2019? I guess that was the month before the 1st person in the U.S. tested positive 4 COVID, US strike in Iraq & Kobe’s death along with his daughter Gigi & others on the plane. Yeah, in some ways December 2019 feels like a calm before the storm month too, but February 2020 has much more of that vibe. January and February 2020 were weird in that they were the pre-pandemic COVID era, if you know what I mean.

What are some calm before the storm months you remember ? Here are a few of mine.
December 2019 August 2001 July/August 2004 August 2008 August 1997 July/August 2004 cuz that was before Myspace & emo blew up? August 2008 cuz that was before the stock market crash & electro-pop blew up? How about August 1997? August 2001 cuz that was before Britney’s snake MTV performance/adult phase & 9/11? yes, I will tell you this I actually used Myspace in July 2004 and had no idea what it was, it wasn't until Fall 2004 when it started blowing up I was like WOW I should have kept my profile and not deleted it lol This girl that was sitting next to me at the library told me about "hey do u use myspace" "hughhhh what???" lol & August 2008 yes because that was a month before the stock market got even worse and all the stores closed, Summer 2008 is seen by many as the end of the 2000s, 2009 as well. But 2008 seems like the finale and 2009 the epilogue. August 1997 because that is the last month before Teen pop was really in your face everywhere, yes you had Backstreet and Spice girls, but by Fall 1997 forget it you could not escape the Spice Girls pepsi commercials on tv 24/7. Also Playstation really kicked it up a notch with advertising and Final Fantasy 7, 5th generation games really became a FORCE by late 97. also Abc tgif changed to be a teen witch block ( Sabrina's influence spawned many clones on the block) And yes as I have said before Summer 2001 was a very LONG IN THE TOOTH summer as slashpop and I have said the 2000-2001 school year is one of the most slowest generic blandest school years of all time. By the time we got to September 2001, 9/11 happened and Teen pop already had one foot out the door. Not to mention Xbox & Gamecube arriving on the scene. It didn't hurt for 7th grade I had to be at a bad girls school and had to wait until the 2001-2002 school year to do 8th grade @ my normal school. So you could imagine how fast things felt. 2001-2002 school year is one of the most fast paced school years ever. Lots of stuff happened in general then. August 2001 is like a walk in the damn park.

Lmao wow looks like u helped Myspace blow up. U started a trend that everyone had 2 follow. XD I remember from October-December 2008, Mervyn's which was my childhood store, was liquidating. In August 2008, 10 year old me did back 2 school shopping @ Mervyn's, got a haircut, received school supplies & had breakfast there. I never would've thought they'd go out of business. Mervyn's was popular & always packed, so that is a shock 2 me. I believe they all closed on the last day of 2008. Circuit City, Linens N Things, KB Toys, Gottschalks were other stores that permanently closed in around 2008-2009. I also see summer 2008 as the last time late 2000s culture peaked or the last period that felt authentically 2000s before the watering down, gutting or stripping of 2000s culture began in fall 2008. Even in 2006, I saw minor signs of decline in the economy with store closures despite the economy still going strong that year. I believe around 2005-2006, gas prices got more expensive. In 2007, I saw the slight decline of 2000s culture & the decline in economy became more noticeable. In December 2007, the Great Recession began which culminated in September 2008 with the stock market crash. I agree that most of 2009 was the last gasp or hurrah or 2000s culture. By fall 2009, we were in an early 2010s world. August 1997 makes sense. I was conceived around this time. I bet the culture was fresh, exciting, fun, loud & cheesy or campy in a good way. I'm glad I wasn't in school during the 2000-2001 school year. I was in 7th grade during the 2010-2011 school year when electro-pop was @ it's peak which kind of declined in the 2011-2012 school year, my 8th grade year. 2015 almost reminds me of that stale feeling as well with the mid 2010s already long in the tooth. I don't know if 2020 or 2020-2021 counts. Late 2010s culture seems long in the tooth now. I had a Gamecube for a short while in 2006 until my father returned it. I'm sorry u had 2 go through that. Even in 2006 stores were closing, Suncoast video & Sam Goody ( STAPLE 2000s MALL STORES) closed down. It was a big deal. But this was rather because of online downloads.

After August 1997 there was feeling of real late 90s becoming solid and shaking off a big chunk of mid 90s influence, while still having some, and boosting some Y2K elements that were planted in 94-96. I feel like Fall 1997 to Early Summer 1998 is this very unique period that does not really completely belong with the surrounding periods.
I would also say May-mid July 1998 in North America was the calm before the storm before the Y2K cultural predominance was felt in August-November of 1998.

That’s also why I feel 2006 is very transitional. I also feel 2006 was very transitional. Even as a 7-8 year old kid @ the time, I felt & thought that way. 2006 felt more modern or futuristic than 2005 & back. I believe that hipster & electro-pop were popping up more by fall 2006. Winter 2005/2006 felt mid 2000s. Spring-summer 2006 was the transition & the last of the classic 2000s. Fall 2006 felt late 2000s & ushered in the modern 2000s. 2006 seems like the 1st full year of the Web 2.0 era of internet. Once FaceBook got released 2 everyone besides college students, JT's Sexyback on the radio, democrats gained control of both houses & PS3 release which kicked off 7th gen gaming is when I felt like the late 2000s arrived around November 2006. A lot of starting points came together in mid to late 2006. Not purely late 2006. I feel that 2007-2008 is more of an offical late 2000s period. Late 2005 has a few late 2000s things about it too. A lot of things in 2004-2005 has a lot of things that wouldn’t he out of place in 2004-2005. Mid and late 2000s have more in common than most periods outside of the Obama era influence towards the end of the late 2000s.

Mid and late 2000s have more in common than most periods outside of the Obama era influence towards the end of the late 2000s. I agree fully with everything u said. Late 2000s culture was coming in throughout 2006 & the hints became more noticeable in late 2005. Do you mean 2007-2008 is more of an official late 2000s period? I believe that school year was the peak of late 2000s. The 2006-2007 school year was leaning late 2000s, but still core 2000s. The 2006-2007 school year had a lot of lingering mid 2000s culture that wouldn’t be out of place in the 2004-2005 & 2005-2006 school years. It didn’t seem like a clear break from the mid 2000s. But then again mid & late 2000s were culturally similar. I used 2 think 2006-2007 was culturally mid 2000s cuz it felt similar 2 the preceding 2 school years until people started saying it wasn’t. 2006-2007 was mostly culturally mid 2000s leaning towards late. I meant 2007-2008 was more officially late. I don’t mean school years, I wasn’t even in school and finished university earlier, I just meant periods in general. I always use two years together. Most culture throughout mid 2004 to early 2006 is mostly similar to that of 2007 to mid 2009.

As someone who was in school 2006-2007 school year you could feel a change
- The WB & UPN ending and becoming The CW - Launch of Windows Vista - Blackberry Pearl Phone - Hype of Iphone the entire school year - Jt's Future Sex Love sounds album - Facebook launching public - Hipster popping up even more (you couldn't ignore it) - Scene popping up even more - Playstation 3 & Wii launch - Britney Spears meltdown - TMZ show launches - MTV TRL Mtv's flagship program becomes PRe Taped due to Youtube ( news articles were going out in Jan 07 that MTv was going to cancel it )
It did have some mid 2000s vibes tho

Most culture throughout mid 2004 to early 2006 is mostly similar to that of 2007 to mid 2009. Yeah 2007-2008 screams late 2000s more than 2006-2007 cuz the 1st iPhone was out, most core 2000s shows ended (That’s So Raven, Kim Possible, Lilo & Stitch, American Dragon, etc), Disney’s new era with Hannah Montana (2006) & Wizards of Waverly Place (2007), Obama’s presidency run Great Recession, etc. Shows like iCarly, Kardashians, Big Bang Theory, Phineas & Ferb, etc began 2 air in 2007-2008. 2006-2007 was a transition 4 several channels like Disney Channel. 2006-2007 or 2007-2008 had the earliest 2010s influences. I consider 2006-2007 the last core 2000s period. I consider 2005-2006 the last classic 2000s period. Core 2000s influences were strong throughout the late 2000s. I’ve seen people put mid 2004-mid 2009 as 1 era, not sure if I’d go that far. I also c 2004-2006 & 2007-2009 as their own eras. The late 2000s vibe was already strong by mid 2006 and , a chunk was in place by late 2005. 2006-2007 a lot of late 2000s shifts were firmly established and it like a modified mid 2000s year, anywhere you were.

I think 6th gen gaming was still relevant during that time, despite 7th gen gaming beginning. Like u kinda said, it was a pre-iPhone world, but the hype 4 it was real. I believe JT’s album influenced the electro-pop sound of the very late 2000s-early 2010s. I remember hearing about Britney in 2007. She kinda showed signs of meltdown as early as 2004 with the multiple marriages. I think she came out with an album in 2007 which also had electro-pop influences. Myspace was very popular in 2006-2007 it got more traffic then Google. Lady Gaga has said that Nelly Furtado's Loose album (Timbaland produced) influenced her to create The Fame album of 2008. The Timbaland tunes of JT & Nelly bridged the gap between R&b pop music to Electropop

I voted 4 that 2 cuz even though COVID was a legitimate threat or fear @ the time with stock market crashing, it was pre-quarantine & people went about their lives normally.

That was when people in China were quarantined, but now they are living normal lives, same as South Korea, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, and Thailand
