Hardly surprising they made this move. Facebook doesn’t need them whereas the news outlets need Facebook to give their shit exposure. In saying that, I have no idea why you would turn to Facebook for news anyways...

In saying that, I have no idea why you would turn to Facebook for news anyways... I agree and its scary to think just how many people out there actually do rely on it for news. I'm worried about the precedent that this move will set. Google has already threatened to ban its search engine in Australia if a compromise isn't reached, and the government is showing no signs of backing down from its proposed new law. It wouldn't surprise me if we lose access to more features across social media.

What exactly is the situation? Our government has passed a new law which will force social media sites like Facebook to pay media companies to use their content. So basically, if an Australian television station were to post a news story on their Facebook page about a new outbreak of COVID-19 (just as an example), Facebook themselves would have to pay that television station just so that they can display their post/content on their website. It's a ridiculous law. Apparently the new law has been introduced to "address power imbalances"... www.accc.gov.au/focus-areas/digital-platforms/news-media-bargaining-code

Typical corporate greed and typical American arrogance.

Well that didn't last long! Would this still be considered a "it's complicated" relationship status though?
