Think about it. 2006 actually FELT like 10 years ago in 2016. Same for 2007, 2008, 2009 for 2017, 2018, 2019, and even 2010 for 2020. But with 2011, I mean that's the year where Core 2010s things started to come up. "Party Rock Anthem" feels dated as hell, but what about something like Drake's Take Care album? especially this song:
It's very weird because 2016 definitely DOES feel like 5 years ago. Maybe in a couple years I'll look back and 2011 will actually seem like 10 years ago for 2021.
I mean, the year is still young, I guess, but it makes me wonder how dated a year like 2016 will feel in 2026.

Yeah, it feels weird that 2011 is 10 years ago. You have a much more established 2010s vibe compared to the year before. Hipsters started to influence fashion, smartphones are becoming more common than in 2010 and social media feels inescapable. Even the music is kinda different from 2009. This might be an unpopular opinion but I think 2011 is closer to 2013 than 2009 in terms of everything.

It just feels incredible recent like a dream. 2011 is like that memorable dream I had about it yesterday.

I know, right? Despite the pandemic, it feels distant but not exactly dated since some stars like Drake and Lady Gaga are still popular, and social media as we know them today (Twitter, Facebook and Instagram) was on the rise. And let's not forget the great 1080p high-definiton resolution displays.

I agree that 2011 being a decade ago feels weird, but I also believe the way in which someone perceives a year is going to depend on their age and their experiences. How you describe 2011 is exactly how I can remember feeling about 2009 and 2010 when they were ten years ago; even 2016 doesn't feel as though it is five years ago for me. I was 17 and in Year 11; it literally only seems like yesterday.
In the case of 2011, we're really not that far removed from where we were at as a society ten years ago. The technology has remained relatively consistent, people generally go about their lives the same as they did back in 2011, pop culture at large hasn't changed too dramatically. It's still relevant in a number of ways. I made this point in another thread recently, but if someone were to have fell into a coma in 2011 and they woke up ten years later in 2021, it wouldn't be that big of a cultural shock for them.
It is interesting though. Despite it only being three years older, 2008 on the other hand not only feels incredibly dated, but it also feels like a completely different world...and 2008 isn't that long ago in the grand scheme of things.

That’s true. The way I see it is that late 2007 to mid 2009 still feels more connected to both core and mid 2000s in spirit. Like it’s a modified and upgraded versions of the mid 2000s. 2011 does but only as the farthest connection than direct influence, it was definitely closer to core and mid 2010s, I would even lump anything from spring-summer 2010 onwards with having more in common with core and mid 2010s. Fall/Winter 2019-2010 is almost same but a bit more late 2000s holdovers mixed in.

2011 does actually feel dated the more I think of it. Not as dated as 2007 felt in 2017, but the more I actually listen to music of the time, look at pictures of technology, I honestly would feel a shock if I woke up in 2011.
IMO even if someone in 2019 woke up in 2021, they would be shocked. Seeing all of these adverts about some crazy worldwide illness that didn't exist back then, trying to walk in a store and being told to wear a mask, it would be a shock, atleast for 2019 (let alone 2011-2018) me.

Yeah it does feel weird, I remember having my 7th birthday in Dubai, going to the park for a feast, and then having a blast in Sega Republic. I even remember getting plenty of neon shirts during that time

Legit thread. 2009/2010 are really the last years that feel properly dated. The proliferation of smartphones makes 2011 onwards feel much less dated.

I've just learned to deal with it and not question it so I can keep my sanity. One day 2022 will be 10 years ago. I'm not even gonna question it, it is what it is. I don't know if it's just me getting older, or if we're living in slower times, or a mix of both.
