I feel it's safe to say that these songs would sound out of place if it were to be released today.

They would sound out of place in 2021, sure, but the songs themselves don't actually sound 'dated' yet.

I remember saying back in 2017 and 2018 that this music sounded like the mid-2010s had exhausted themselves and like we were just going through the motions, but it's kind of shocking looking back to realize just how dark most of these singles were. Maybe it's just from all the bedroom pop and lofi, but these all seem so bleak.

To be very honest, I'm already missing 2017 😅

Dark in the sense of unhappy rather than bad (it's up to you to decide on that). I guess Trump and Brexit truly ruined everyone's moral. Everything was so grim back then...

Comparing these Cardi B songs that reached #1 in the charts. 2017: 2021: This is interesting. The music and video styles are both pretty different. Hip hop in 2017 was a bit more gritty and dark while now in 2021 it seems to be taking a more fun and pop-ish direction

The word “dated” is already affecting 2016/2017?? Man I must be going crazy

Let us not forget that 2017 was the peak of emo rap

"Stressed Out" would sound pretty out of place on the charts in 2021.
