Thanks to @john Titor for the name idea with his thread "The False Mid 2000s". Here it seems like half the people think of 2019 as being in the same era as right now, and the other half think 2019 was different from both now and the late 10s (this is my camp). Here's my idea for two different "eras" - The False Early 2020s and the COVID-19 Era...
THE FALSE EARLY 2020s - Spring 2019 to Winter 2020 You could truly point the very first stepping stones to the False Early 2020s to around September 2018, when TikTok was created. In my opinion that's too early for a number of reasons, and Fall 2018 and Winter 2018/19 still feel fully Late 2010s. The False Early 2020s instead begins around March or April 2019, this is when artists that would go on to define 2020-2021 would blow up. DaBaby, Megan Thee Stallion, Pop Smoke, Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X all blew up in the Spring of 2019.
By the Fall of 2019, the False Early 2020s was a lot more apparent. AirPods blew up during the Summer, and people were using them to listen to artists who they hadn't known existed the year before. The vibe was just a bit different from 2018 and especially 2017 at this point. Juice WRLD passed away on the morning of December 8, 2019 (RIP), and posthumous songs are still being released to this day. The turn of the decade saw trends like TikTok blow up even more, and artists like Roddy Ricch getting even more attention than they were in 2019 with hits entering the Top 10.
Around late January 2020, news of a "coronavirus" started circulating - some were worried, others were indifferent. Kobe Bryant also passed in late January, and this brought the world's attention away from the news of some virus to focus on one of the biggest NBA legends and his legacy (RIP). In mid February, Pop Smoke, who was just up-and-coming and popularized the NY Drill sound, unfortunately passed away after he was shot in a robbery (RIP).
In early March 2020, that virus that was periodically making news headlines since late January was starting to become a little more worrysome - it was now spreading across the world. Then it hit - this is the start of the COVID-19 Era...
THE COVID-19 ERA - Spring 2020 to now COVID-19 was declared a pandemic on March 11, 2020. Schools were closing, people were losing their jobs. - Unlike June 2021, March 2020 was just dealing with it. And it was madness. Toilet paper being hoarded by dozens of Americans in paranoia - conspiracy theories... Absolute madness - a month later, April 2020, people were getting used to masking up and using hand sanitizer, but the hysteria wasn't yet over.
On May 25, 2020, a man named George Floyd (RIP) was killed in cold blood by a police officer in asphyxiation. This caused nationwide protests throughout the Summer of 2020, and sparked outrage. It brought even more attention to police funding and training than ever before - but even today, over a year later, it is still way to common to see a headline about a black man or woman being killed simply for existing. It even happened on April 22, 2021 - the very day the police officer who killed George was sentenced.
On a lighter note, Donald Trump was voted out of office in the 2020 Election, and Joe Biden was inaugurated in January 2021. This was the end of the Trump Era, but now there were more COVID-19 concerns, mutations of the virus forming all around the world... Where I'm from (Ontario), this caused us to go into a SECOND lockdown lasting from December 2020 to February 2021, and a THIRD starting in April that is still ongoing. Meanwhile, vaccines were released to public used in early 2021, with pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer, Moderna, Astrazeneca, and Johnson & Johnson creating their variation of the vaccine.
Pop culturally - more particularly music, we are still listening to the same artists that blew up in 2019 - except a lot of them, such as Polo G, have blown up a lot more than where they were in 2019, and others, like Pop Smoke, have unfortunately passed away, with his style still being around in the modern NY Rap Scene. Meanwhile, new genres such as Synthpop, Disco, and Pop Punk revival have gained in popularity during the COVID-19 Era, examples:
Here's hoping we leave the COVID-19 Era and enter the Core 2020s soon - but until then, here's a couple 2021 hits to end us off on...

dudewitdausernamegreat thread ! I agree that we are pretty much almost out of the Covid era, in the northeast it's pretty much over, we don't have to wear masks, stores and sport arenas at FULL capacity. By Fall 2021 the Covid era will be coming to a close, it's going to be the same vibe when the y2k era ended, it happened over the summer gradually.

I agree with most of this stuff, however, trap gotta die to finish off the 2010s already Trap is moving in a very different direction in the early 2020s, more melodic, bouncy and fun and not monotone with overproduced beats like it was in say 2017. I personally enjoy the new sound of trap. Examples of the new melodic sound are Roddy Ricch, Polo G, Rod Wave, etc., the bouncy sound is DaBaby, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, etc., Lil Baby mixes the two.

Adding to this, melodic seems to be doing better in the charts than bouncy right now. A lot of guitar-based trap beats with melodic flows. Though, one bouncy Trap song that charted high earlier in the year was "Up" by Cardi B.

I agree with most of this stuff, however, trap gotta die to finish off the 2010s already There is just so many trap music going around that I don’t see it coming to an end anytime soon. At least the trap we have today, in my opinion, is better because it sounds more of a popish and bright vibe rather than that dark emo type vibe it gave off in the late 2010s.

Trap will just become one of those things associated heavily with both the mid/late 10s and early 20s. But it does have a very different sound now which is the "Early 2020s" trap sound. NY Drill however, is purely a Early 20s thing, which might last into the Mid or even Late 20s.

Great post! I stand with this. Right now are at the tail end of the transition. Phase 1 of the transition is the Proto-2020 Vision era from spring 2019 to winter 2019/2020 which leans late 2010s because of it being pre-COVID. Phase 2 of the transition is spring 2020 to winter 2020/2021 which leans neither late 2010s, nor early 2020s. That is probably the peak of the apocalyptic era we have been in since the mid to late 2010s with COVID in full swing and the uncertainty of the 2020 election. Phase 3 of the transition is spring 2021 to summer 2021 which leans early 2020s as Biden is now president and the PS5 is out, though PS5 will not make a dent until 2023. COVID vaccinations are in full swing. By fall 2021, we will be out of the transition into the early 2020s and it will be clear what the vibe is similar to fall 2001 when we entered the early 2000s and left the Y2K transition era. 2021 is the 2020s version of 2001. Just like 2001 backlashed against the late 1990s-2000, 2021 is backlashing against the the late 2010s-2020. We will enter the classic 2020s in fall 2021 like we entered the classic 2000s in fall 2001. 2022 will be peak early 2020s culture like 2002 is peak early 2000s culture. Core 2020s will begin in spring 2023 like the core 2000s began in spring 2003. Early 2020s culture will last at the earliest through winter 2022/2023 or at the latest through winter 2023/2024.

I personally think False Early 2020s is more straightforward, though. I can see the "True Early 2020s" going from Fall 2021 (or maybe Winter 2021/22) to Winter 2023/24 or maybe Spring 2024. It will be interesting to see. I think trap music will stay throughout the Early 2020s and Drill might stay well into the Mid to even Late 2020s...

Nice analysis!
I knew something was starting to change in spring of 2019 but it was too early to tell. It's definitely much more clearer now than it was then. 2010s trends were gradually dying throughout mid-late 2019/early 2020. The change was even more sudden through the rest of 2020. It certainly does feel the 2010s zeitgeist really died in 2021. It will be even more clear around late 2021/early 2022.

Who knows what will happen in the November 2024 election. If Biden gets reelected, then I might consider fall 2024 the start of the mid 2020s. If Biden loses, then I might consider all of 2024 apart of early 2020s culture or at best a transition from early 2020s culture to mid 2020s culture. You are right! It is definitely interesting and exciting to witness. I can see trap being relevant throughout the Early 2020s and Drill staying alive into the Mid or Late 2020s, although the sound might change a bit to fit in with the times.

Which kinda sucks, pop culture stagnates when a genre holds on to the crown for so long. Like, imagine if electropop was still popular in 2018, wouldn't that completely change the feel of the time? If pop rock was still popular in the 2010s i don't think people would be doing pop rock throwbacks today.

Trap has only been charting since 2015 and has changed a lot since then, "Trap Queen" or "Flex (Ooh Ooh Ooh)" couldnt even come out in 2017, let alone today. A lot of genres span 8-12 years if you group them together. Dancehall was huge starting in the early 90s and was still huge in the mid 2000s, the roots of Electropop started in 2006 and it only died completely in 2014. House got big in the late 80s and stopped around the late 90s. I can definitely see Trap's mainstream lifespan being 2015-around 2024 with the peak of Trap being 2019/2020 (turn of the decade).

The rest are holdovers from the 2000s and new genres that are still popular in 2021
