This is a topic I was recently thinking about. Should tablets replace textbooks in schools?
As much as I like going on the Internet and using my phone, I'm personally against the idea of tablets replacing textbooks. I think replacing textbooks with tablets would put lots of stain on the eye, and it would be more distracting considering they're on a tablet and can go to any website at any time. It would add up more screen time and not to mention they can be very expensive. What do you think?

I agree with you. I think textbooks are more beneficial for learning than tablets. Tablets can also be damaged much more easily and they can be susceptible for viruses and other computer malware.

I agree aswell. All the juniors at my school now use tablets instead of textbooks, but the thing is all they do is play games and watch YouTube videos every lesson so they're not really learning anything.

It's probably happening at a lot of primary/elementary schools as well. I know for a fact that the Kindergarten kids at my primary school use tablets for certain class tasks!

You actually learn some stuff from games and youtube videos, but not the kind your teacher wants. But kids can also get distracted and search up things which are completely unrelated to the school work.

For example, Wikipedia is known to be unreliable due to people editing and putting things that aren't true

I actually came across a really good example of that just a few weeks ago!

All points very valid of course. But how do kids learn the art of writing properly which is essentially not possible using such devices? Technology has its place but it shouldn’t be replacing all the basics needed to develop IMO.

University textbooks are massive. I always got the ebook version and carried around my laptop instead.
I don't think there's anything wrong with switching over to tablets. In fact, you can make textbooks much more interactive that way if you add things like videos.
As for being distracted in class, just disable the Internet on the tablets. On Android there's a way to disable Internet at certain times (and you would need the app's password to re-enable it), if I were an elementary school teacher I would use that.

I personally don't buy the argument that tablets are just as effective in developing writing skills as using pen and paper. Even though you can write/draw on a tablet device, it requires less force and I don't think it helps in developing a proper writing grip. University textbooks are massive. I do agree that tablets serve a purpose and they can be beneficial for learning. However, with that said, I still don't think they should entirely replace using pen and paper, or textbooks in High School. There's a time and place for everything and I believe teachers/student are becoming too reliant on using tablets for learning. Also, welcome to the forum!

I think it should be balanced. Have some things on paper and some on tablets.
