The more I think of it, the more I realize that whilst 1997/1998 was quite different from the previous 90s in many ways, there were still ties to the core 90s. 90s alternative was still popular during this time. Think bands like Third Eye Blind, The Verve, Goo Goo Dolls, and as you brought up in the classic/modern 90s thread, Sugar Ray. By 1999, this is when bands we associate with the early 2000s like Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, Creed, and Blink-182 blew up in popularity. I think culturally, 1997/1998 was a mixture of Gen-X culture and oncoming millennial culture. I think rock in 1997/1998 was still geared mostly towards Gen X, but pop and rap had already shifted toward millennial culture. 1999 is really when the millennial zeitgeist across the board was solidified. I'd check out this video to understand the shift that happened in 1999. Exactly! Hence, why 1998 was the true end of the core 90s to me, despite the 90s obviously being a very modern (and watered down to some people) version of itself based on all of those things. It was still Gen Xer-oriented to an extent, especially with rock. The shift that happened in 1999 was real. The Millennial-targeted cultural zeitgeist was solidifed, like you said.

It brings back so many memories. I was graduating Kindergarten when this was filmed. I remember that time so vividly. Even for my age (I was 6), I distinctly remember the vibe of the mid 2000s. It was eccentric, optimistic (Compare to now), fun. I would even say that the late 1990s borns were the very last people to remember a time when modern technology like smartphones, social media, digital streaming platforms, and tablets was either non-existent or not as dominant compare to now. that school year was amazing and this video shows why, LOL @ anyone saying 2005 was boring and DARK LMAOOOOOOOOO , yes there was emo and it did take over that school year but the overall vibe was super upbeat. Dark? Yes, especially with all the emo Shadow the Hedgehog shit that was popular. Boring? BRUH, this was the year YouTube was born and Crazy Frog was popular. That is like, the opposite of boring.

That is like, the opposite of boring. it was not as dark as you think it was, it was just stuff in media had an emo look or everything all black or punk looking with nautical stars. Yes video games were getting more edgy with stuff like shadow ( btw that game flopped) but the "edginess" had a more Disney innocent cloud to it. Really hard to describe but it was like a warm blanket vibe. IRL the year felt super carefree like anything could happen. Def was not boring, PSP came out, Xbox 360 came out, Batman begins, so on and so forth lol Also last full year of That 70s show, Malcolm and The WB network
