The early 20s have been way more conventional than the late 2010s so far, Pretty much all the biggest songs of the early 20s have been throwback songs. Now, I know throwback music was really big in the 2010s, however, it's getting ridiculous now. The Weeknd, Dua lipa, Tyler the Creator (just announced his 90s r&b album) Don't forget to say so, blinding lights, don't start now, good 4 u. Avril's new album is gonma be a 2000s throwback album. Contrast this with the early 2010s, the time of larger than life Electropop, new and exciting genres like dubstep. Music was changing really fast back then. Also, contrast it with the late 2010s when we had new artists like Lil nas x and cardi b become big, the rise of trap and bedroom pop. I know that the 2020s just started, but this wave of retro-obessed music doesn't seem like It's going away anytime soon. The state of music in 2021 is quite sad, in my opinion. Really, I think it's just a reflection of the culture. I said this earlier but may I remind you I just recently got an ad for Friends: The Reunion. In fact, many ads for streaming services seem to be based off older franchises from the 90s and 00s like South Park, The Office, and Friends.

What kept the era less boring is the spacey and cloudy rap trend of the time: TBH I'm not a fan of any kind of mumble rap. Still better than the prevailing "woke pop" trend though (Beyonce - Lemonade, Katy Perry - Witness)

Uh... I wouldn't call Beyonce's lemonade "fake woke"
But anyways, 2021 really has been the year of the throwback

I'm not a fan of any woke music at all to be honest. I prefer pop culture to be edgy and daring. Anything that pisses off some people is a lot more interesting than safe bland generic pop culture. That's why the 90s are still my favorite pop culture decade because it was literally all about that shit. Ace Ventura, South Park, Beavis and Butthead, Marilyn Manson, gangsta rap, grunge, etc.

That and I've always been more into hip hop than anything else.

I dunno, 2011 and 2012 to an extent still strike me as mainly skeuomorphic, and that doesn't look like something from 2007 to me at all lol. Flat design seemed to take over in 2013 after Windows 8 and iOS 7 came out. Others started copying them. I absolutely LOVE the minimalist/maximalist/futuristic aesthetic that was popular 2010-2014. For a while, every brand was designing their software to look neon-futuristic. I actually found the name for this particular aesthetic, it's called Hexatron. I agree with you, it looks really neat. It seemed to be influenced by a mixture of the then-still popular Frutiger Aero aesthetic, mixed with the Vector aesthetic of the Y2K era. TRON Legacy comes to mind when thinking of this aesthetic. In fact, I definitely should make a thread about this particular aesthetic.

Ah yes, that is one of the defining aesthetics of the 2010s. Reminds me of Elon's cybertruck.

2017 through mid 2018 sucks! Fuck that era! On June 16, 2015, Trump announcing his 2016 presidential run is when I felt the country go backwards. Luckily a Democratic blue wave occurred in the November 2018 elections. The late 2010s were a return to the conservatism of the 1980s through early 1990s and of the 2000s. Luckily a minor backlash against that started brewing in late 2018 and carried throughout 2019 into 2020. Maybe another reason why 2019 is my favorite late 2010s year.

I fully agree that the late 2010s saw 80s conservatism comeback with a vengeance. That's ironic because the 80s saw 50s conservatism comeback with a vengeance. That's why sometimes i wonder if we'll see 10s style conservatism comeback in the 2040s. Indeed, the conservative wave we had in the late 10s today gave birth to the newer left movements like bread-tube and the anti-identity-politics left. Left-wingers were really lazy back in the early 10s, the 2016 elections were a wake-up call, and it seems to have worked.

Left-wingers were really lazy back in the early 10s, the 2016 elections were a wake-up call, and it seems to have worked. In the 1980s, people were nostalgic for the 1950s. Most 1980s TV sitcoms and movies are cookie cutter, mostly about white families just like the 1950s. Actually 2040s seeing a resurgence of late 2010s conservatism is not far off. I think 2000s nostalgia will be huge throughout the 2020s into the early 2030s. Then by the mid 2030s, 2010s nostalgia will start coming in, to dominate in the 2040s. Gay marriage being legalized in 2015, Target eliminating gender labels on toys and businesses (Target included) opening up restrooms and fitting rooms to people who identify with whatever gender they identify with for the day really fueled the conservative backlash against liberalism in the mid 2010s. I think safe spaces too faced backlash. I remember hearing about a Black church being burned in 2015 and the Pulse Nightclub shooting. You are right. No doubt the 2016 elections were a wake up call for left-wingers. It did work because the 2018 and 2020 elections had a record breaking number of voters. Left-wingers really thought they had it in the bag and had nothing to worry about in the early 2010s.
