As unpopular as this opinion sounds, I think the mid 2010s are a short blur between the early 2010s and late 2010s. The mid 2010s do not stick out to me as much as the mid 1970s, mid 1980s, mid 1990s and mid 2000s. I consider mid 2013-mid 2014 the last phase of the cultural early 2010s, but on steroids with upgraded technology. A lot of the music, movies, TV shows and fashion styles from then already existed in the late 2000s and or early 2010s, nothing original besides Vine, GTA V, PS5, iOS 7. Late 2014-Early 2015 transitions between the cultural early 2010s and cultural late 2010s, probably the first time late 2010s influences are relevant and the last time early 2010s influences are relevant. I consider mid 2015-mid 2016 the first phase of the cultural late 2010s as many popular trends from the late 2010s got popular then.

I still think the mid 2010s are a thing but I do think that 2013-2014 lean early 10s and 2015-2016 lean late 10s.
Something like "Watch Me Whip/Nae Nae" would sound out of place in 2010-2012 or 2017-2019.

I think the mid '10s had a different feel to them for two distinct reasons. 1) Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, and other electropop artists were no longer popular. Artists like Adele, Lorde, The Chainsmokers, and Ariana Grande took their place. 2) The recession was over. While it officially ended in 2009, it didn't feel like it until around late 2012/early 2013. I'd even say 2015 and early 2016 had more in common with the early '10s than the late, though the foundation for the late' 10s was being laid at that point.

Isn't 2016 mid 2010s? 2016 was peak 10s Yeah 2016 was peak 2010s. January to August 2016 is technically mid 2010s and September to December 2016 is technically late 2010s. Why 2016 is peak 10s - EDM is still popular, and Trap is rising in popularity (it truly became mainstream in 2017) - Obama is still president, but the election takes place in Fall. IMO 2011 is the peak of the Early 10s, 2015 is the peak of the Mid 10s, 2016 is the Peak of the entire decade, and 2018 is the peak of the Late 10s.

Electropop fully died to me by or around late 2014, although signs of decline came around late 2011 to 2013. I remember hearing Ariana Grande’s “Break Free,” released and recorded in 2014, thinking it sounds like a 2010 or 2011 song, which charted high. Unemployment returned to 2006 levels by late 2014. Politics became more divisive and bitter in late 2014. Of course that escalated into today. Some articles claim the Trump era began around late 2014. He might have considered running for president then, not announcing it until June 16, 2015. In the November 2014 election, Republicans won all the seats which kind of foreshadowed Trump winning in November 2016. However 2015 and 2016 had Obama as president, so for the most part the culture was still liberal and progressive with a conservative backlash brewing since late 2014. I can understand why you say 2015 and early 2016 had more in common with the early 2010s. 2016 might be the last year with early 2010s traces. I think 2016 is the last year of the classic 2010s, the last year the 2010s peaked, the last core 2010s year, the last year that can represent the 2010s. What happened in late 2014? I typically look back on that as somewhat of a "calm before the storm." I'd say the current political era began in June 2015 with two very specific events. These events were metaphorically taking a torch to a nest of killer bees (killer bees don't lose their stingers so they don't give up). 1) Caitlyn Jenner's coming out and appearance on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine 2) The Supreme Court of the United States legalizing same-sex marriage in all 50 states on 6/26/15.

I agree that 2016 is the quintessential year of the 2010s. The peak year of the early 2010s was definitely 2011 or the 2011-12 school year. The peak year of the late 2010s was definitely 2018 and could be the 2017-18 school year or the 2018-19 school year tbh. 2016 is the most representative year of the 2010s but I don’t think it was the last core 2010s year. 2017 was definitely core to me since it was the first year of Trump’s presidency, the year Fortnite blew up, the year before tiktok, #MeToo was a thing, mass shootings occurred (sad but defining aspect of the 2010s, unfortunately), fidget spinners, and typical 2010s artists were still popular like Taylor Swift, Drake, Justin Bieber, Rihanna etc. I would still consider even part of 2018 to be core but not all the way. 2017 was the last fully core 2010s year imo
