In my thread about the cultural peaks of eras, I said the late 2000s began culturally in 2005. Looking deeper into the year, I'm finding EVEN MORE evidence in support of this. So many things that are associated with the late 2000s actually began in 2005 it's crazy. Just a few examples
-YouTube launched -Xbox 360 came out -Post-movie SpongeBob started -Johnny Test premiered -The Dark Knight trilogy began -Paramore's first album, All We Know Is Falling, comes out -Lego Star Wars, the first Lego game based off a licensed property, is released -Club Penguin came out -The flash game website Armor Games launched -Naruto began airing in the United States on Toonami
I could go on, but what I'm saying is that whilst 2005 is definitely a mid-2000s year, it also has tons of elements of the late 2000s before they truly hit their prime (2007-2008).

I don't know if this counts or not, but snap peaked in the late 2000s (2007 to be specific), and that really began to pick up steam in 2005 with songs like Laffy Taffy

Scruffy facial hair was already a thing in 2005, people think it started in 2008 or worse 2010-2011.

Just like 2015 had late 10s elements?

Just like 2015 had late 10s elements? Yes Hell, I'd say 2015 has more late 10s influences than early 10s influences... Except Obama was still the president, but Gaga-esque electropop was dead and edm took over, songs like "lean on" (major laser) and "sorry" (Justin beiber) could easily come out in 2016 or 2017, but not 2014 or 2013. 2014 also had late 10s influences imo, we saw the rise of alt-right vs SjW discourse around this time and gamergate happened in 2014. Plus Taylor Swift's 1989

2005 is the last year of early 2000s influences which died around 2006 or 2007, but the late 2000s influences outweighed them. 2005 clearly belongs in the second half of the 2000s culturally. 2004 is the last year I can say belongs in the first half of the 2000s culturally. 2005 is pushing it. Oh yeah, 2005 absolutely is not in the first half of the 2000s. 2005 to me is a Web 2.0 era year. IMO the early 2000s influence died off completely with the release of Windows Vista, PS3, and Wii. IMO, the 2006-2007 school year should be renamed to "The early 2000s are officially dead"

The year for most early 2000s holdovers/continuations would be late 04/very early 05. Last period of very general early 2000s influences is 2006. Last tiny traces of early 2000s is anywhere between early 08 to early 09.

Oh SHIT, how could I have forgotten about the defining video game trend of the late 2000s? The first Guitar Hero game was released in 2005, which would later pave the way for Rock Band and the later Guitar Hero games.

Plus Taylor Swift's 1989 I agree on 2015. I do not know why some people would group 2015 with 2012 instead of 2018. 2012 and 2015 have more differences than 2015 and 2018. Exactly a lot of songs from 2015 could easily come out in 2016, 2017, even 2018, but not 2014 and back. Yes late 2010s influences can be traced back to 2014, especially that fall.

Memes in 2015 are also much more similar to 2018 than 2012. 2012 was still the image macro era of memes. 2013 IMO was the start of the modern era with memes like Doge and Lenny Face.

I agree. 2012 still had minor late 2000s influence. I can gel with 2013 being the start of modern memes. I think memes started getting more political in 2015. Exactly like The Dark Knight Rises being the third-highest grossing movie of 2012.

What tiny traces of the early 2000s are around between early 2008 to early 2009? I am curious because by 2008, the early 2000s felt like another world. 2008 is when Windows XP stopped being sold in stores. The Nokia 3310 looked completely ancient by this point, in much the same way we now view BlackBerries and early iPhones as ancient.

Thinking about it, I'd say the true early 2000s lasted from about 2001 to 2003. That's when things like Lord of the Rings, Linkin Park, and the Game Boy Advance were all popular simultaneously. 2004 still had some elements. Linkin Park had some big hits, although Breaking the Habit wasn't even nu-metal and a sign of their later output. The GBA was still popular even with the DS's release. By 2006 the early 2000s were mostly old-hat, but I'd say 2007 was when they completely died off, again, mostly due to technological innovation killing off early 2000s tech like Windows XP, the PS2, and GameCube.

Ah that makes sense. Certain stores that were around in the early 2000s went out of business around that time, Circuit City, Linens N Things, Mervyns, KB Toys. I do not know if that counts, but is something I just thought of. Circuit City going out of business is more a sign of the late 20th century dying than the 2000s lmao.
