No doubt more changes occurred in mid to late 2013 but winter 2012/2013 was leaning mid 2010s and mostly mid 2010s.

I'm tired of 2012 being seen as detached from 2013 and 2014. 2012 as whole has more in common with 13 and 14 than with late 09-early 2011, despite things that could never exist in 2013-2014 from 2012. Also things that first appeared in 2011 and 2012 became more apparent in 2013 and 2014.

What makes winter 2012-2013 (November 2012 to March 2013) closer to the mid 2010s

Graphic design trends mostly the same/identical to 2013-2014
Big social media awareness and hashtag campaigns as much of a thing
Twitter, facebook and instagram become also more official and widespread personal branding/ or business marketing platform tools like the mid 2010s
The hipster look is 97-99 percent the same with some early 10s styles still in place
Common fashion/hair is 97 percent identical to the mid 2010s
Very particular 2013-2014 looks (13- 2014 hipster undercut and similar hairstyles, massive beards, colorful glasses frames, H&M stretch jeans etc) are already common/increasingly common depending on location
Particular mid 2010s music sounds/styles almost there, there or similar
Many hits are recorded on albums from 2012 and are released as singles in 2013 and 2014
Smart Phones mostly in full swing with some exceptions
Iphones are the go to phone
HD TV mostly there
Streaming/paid streaming becomes more of a thing
In game purchasing is a thing
Topics like LGBT rights mostly respected collectively
Peak of Vice Media
Early SJWs
Wii U and PS Vista
Youtube more in common with mid 2010s at this point

2012-13 does have strong connections with both 2011-12 and 2013-14. This period was the last hurrah for electropop, Gangnam Style and Diamonds sound very early 2010s. I agree that hipster was mostly identical to 2013-14, I don't see much difference. I feel like the mid 2010s have two parts. 2012-13 does seem to have more in common with 2013-2014. No strong connections with 2015-16, when there were new trends creeping in that feel alien compared to 2012-13.

What I don't agree with is the graphic trends being the same. While 2012-13 had Windows 8, it was mostly a skeuomorphic era, especially with the iPhone. The SJW's were mostly under the nose at this time, barely noticeable and easily ignored. Hashtags were already a thing with the Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street in 2011.

I was working in design agency during this year and I can tell you firsthand 13-14 and 12-13 have much in common. The latest design trends in terms of cutting edge graphics used in billboards, and, brand identity and fonts were nearly identical.

2012-2013 was a stand out year for hashtags and social media advertising were used in major brand campaigns and activations with Heineken, coke, dove etc I’ve even worked on some at this time.

It was also when people starting using things like Instagram and Facebook for business and self promotion a lot more and branding/marketing/building a following usihg social media etc

09-11 did not reach anywhere near the level of any of these things.

Yes but a bit closer to 2013-2014. I never said it was the mid 2010s just that November 2012 to March 2013 was more mid 2010s than early 2010s and has a ton of shared traits by this time.

I 100% agree with you slashpop. The Mid-Late 2012 was when the culture felt more like the 2010s by this point. It was the first period of when the Late 2000s felt a little bit different. For me, I also want to say Late 2011 was when the 2010s culture started. But to each its own.
