Yeah it does. IMO 2012 is arguably the first year to have many ties to today. Obviously it’s a very different era culturally, but in terms of politics it has the earliest influences of the political era we’re in today. I wouldn’t say it got truly bad until 2014 though. 2012 was also when Instagram became popular, so it feels more recent than 2010. I think the political era we're in was already starting to brew with the Tea Party and Birther movement of 2010. Occupy Wall Street could also be the starting point as well. Occupy Wall Street highlights an issue with left-wing movements in our modern era, especially movements revolving around economic issues like OWS was. It started so strong and partisan and then quickly fizzled out. Meanwhile, the Tea Party held together and became the MAGA movement and remade the Republican Party.

People tend to forget about the Tea Party in 2009-2010. I feel like that's the blueprint of MAGA culture of modern times. This wouldn't be out of place today:

Years are not inherently good or bad. It's what you make out of them that makes them good or bad, or your judgements regarding specific events that makes them good or bad. Basing the quality of a year off of entertainment is also a sad reflection of how you perceive the world, especially given that we live in a world where you're freely allowed to be more selective with your hobbies and how you spend your freetime. There's more to life besides entertainment. Entertainment is not inherently bad, as nothing is inherently bad, it's what you make out of it that seals the deal. If you want years to start being good again, you need to get out there and make them good, get out there and make a change to make life better for yourself and better for the ones you love. Pop culture has a large entertainment component, however way you look at it, if one is looking at years in terms of a religious or fine arts timeline I would understand. In this context, it's perfectly legitimate to value entertainment as a mass consumer, I would say entertainment is a big component of pop culture not the entirety. If someone thinks something like celebrity gossip is trivial when factoring the relevance to the year , I may agree but others may see it differently, and if has a meaningful enough significance to the year it is perfectly fine to mention it as connected to some aspect of that year's pop culture that deserves collective recognition. Also entertainment is not always pure or shallow consumerism, there are many different substantial things one can gain or connect to with fads, technology, music, etc but also it is perfectly fine to reminisce over pure entertainment. The point here is that reflecting on mainstream entertainment is not necessarily connected to one's personal interests or responsibility to change things if they don't like them. I get what you are coming from but I think it's a bit extreme to say it's a sad reflection and to assume that people perceive the world according to their year grouping. It's good to encourage people to try, a bottom line is few people trying is unlikely to radically change things and people should freely base a year off of entertainment however they please without judgements imo.

2009 or 2010 was to me. Still had a strong 00s vibe before our lives became dominated by magical rectangles that fit in our pocket. Music was still kind of decent. Internet culture wasn't so oversaturated with memes. Social Media was still a novelty.
