I remember 2020 being hyped up a lot in the mid 2010s and some of the late 2010s as being a futuristic year, maybe not as much as 2000 was in the 1990s, but still 2020 was hyped up. 2020 was far from the futuristic and technological society we expected. Most of the technology introduced in 2020 was a continuation of 2010s technology. I do not think 2020 introduced new, ground breaking, cutting edge technology. Sure the PS5 was released that November, but it seems like a PS3 3.0 or PS4 2.0. The smartphones released in 2020 was a late 2010s continuation. I did not hear about touch screen flip phones in 2020. To be fair I think a lot of this has to do with COVID. Musical and fashion was changing a bit in 2020, but not enough to remove themselves from 2018. Movies, TV and gaming seemed like a full on late 2010s continuation. Even if COVID did not happen, do you think 2020 would have lived up to its hype? What are your thoughts? As crazy as this sounds, 2020 reminds me a lot about 2000. 2000 was also hyped up a lot in the 1990s, but 2000 ended up being a 1998 part 3 or a 1999 part 2. Nothing drastic happened in 2000 asides reality TV, Bush election and PS2 debut, but the PS2 was not huge until a year later. had covid not happened it would have been like 2000 even more

Just with better technology and the Y2K bug is a virus. Mass panic, things shutting down.

At least 2000 was still a fun, great time. 2020 is literally one of, if not the WORST year of the entire 21st century so far

You could say the same about 2000 tho. Almost everything about 2000 was just a continuation of the late 90s. The only thing that set it apart was the general attitude and the way brands would market themselves as more “futuristic”

Just with better technology and the Y2K bug is a virus. Mass panic, things shutting down. Yeah I can see that. Sub optimism from 2000 with pessimism in 2020. In 2000 people were still looking forward to the future and welcomed technological progress. In 2020, people were looking backwards to the past and sighed over technological change.

Yeah those are the parallels between 2000 and 2020 because both are futuristic sounding years. Besides COVID, 2020 is a cultural late 2010s year.

The only thing that set it apart was the general attitude and the way brands would market themselves as more “futuristic” I would argue even that's not really the case because you already had this futurism creeping in starting in 1997. 2000 is very similar to 1999. Windows ME is an excellent example. The commercials for it advertised it as the amazing new futuristic and cool operating system, yet it's basically Windows 98 Third Edition.

They are very similar to each other. Songs and movies from both years are interchangeable. 2000 is also very similar to 1998. Just look at the games that came out in 2000: Majora's Mask, Banjo-Tooie, Spyro: Year of the Dragon. The 1998-1999 school year kicked nu metal into the mainstream, and it peaked in 2000-2001.

The 1998-1999 school year kicked nu metal into the mainstream, and it peaked in 2000-2001. Then I guess it is hard to make a case for twin years. The early half of 1998 still had core 1990s leftovers, maybe some mid 1990s leftovers that the second half of 1998 no longer had. Nonetheless 2000 is an extension or continuation of 1998 and 1999 pop culturally. 2000 is in the same era as 1998 and 1999. Games and movies from 2000 also scream late 1990s. A lot of songs released in 2000 were actually recorded in the late 1990s. If you look up songs and movies from 2000 and look in the comments, you'll find many people calling them 90s. I still agree with you on 2000 being a twin year of 1999. 1999 was a very changeful year compared to 2000. The same sort of aesthetic in 1999 and 2000.

In the Remember 2000 YouTube videos, many people commented that music was so good in the 1990s and they miss the 1990s. I think someone on a board mentioned that one or few of the 2000 Disney movies did so well that they could be crammed in with the Disney Renaissance era of 1989-1999. In one of the YouTube videos on 2000, people commented how 2000 was 1999 part 2 and before the 2000s became the 2000s. I think movies were still traditionally animated and in the late 1990s in 2000. I guess they went digital in 2001. 2000s cultural movies began in 2001 with Shrek, Monsters, Harry Potter, etc. Because 2000 in general is a FALSE 2000s year. It arguably has more in common with the 90s if anything. What ties it with the 2000s is nu metal, Eminem, SpongeBob, etc. Even still, the vibe is very 90s. Same goes for 1990, the false 90s year that is otherwise a continuation of the 80s.

We will have to wait until 2023 or 2024 to see improvements. By then the 2020s will be full swing. I'm very excited for 2024, i believe we we'll have plenty of big cultural/technological "revolutions" during 2023-2025. But then i remember that 2024 is going to be election year in the US... The possibility of Trump returning gives me the creeps

I can see 2024 being transitional between the early and mid 2020s although I hope all of 2024 is mid 2020s. I pray that Biden wins in 2024. I hope in the 2022 midterms, Democrats keep their seats or win more seats, making it hard for Trump in 2024.

Same goes for 1990, the false 90s year that is otherwise a continuation of the 80s. 2000-September 10, 2001 is the false early 2000s era. Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears, 2000s icons were already huge in 2000. You are right 2000 has that late 1990s vibe. I think 2000 was a watered down version of 1998 and 1999. 2000 was a predominately 5th generation gaming world with PS1 and like consoles being kings or queens. That was the last full year of Clinton. I think even TV was more 1990s than 2000s. Yeah I see the first half or 3 quarters of 1990 as a part of the cultural late 1980s. 1990 was all Madonna, Whitney Houston and NES, plus cartoons being merchandise-driven Saturday morning cartoons. If I described this to somebody, they'd assume it was the 80s, and that's because 1990 is a cultural 80s year. IMO, mid-late 1991 was the start of the cultural early 90s. Once Sonic, Rugrats, and Nirvana emerged, the 90s were truly here. I remember N64 being big in 2000 and even into 2001, with games like Conker's Bad Fur Day, Paper Mario, and Mario Party 3. By late 2001 the cultural early 2000s were fully here.

A lot of songs released in 2000 were actually recorded in the late 1990s. 2000 after the first few months was increasingly a hybrid era and more and more detached from actual real culture of 1998 and 1999. Those two years overall, while having a number of similaries, especially in retrospect, are still overall different from the year 2000 which is more like a proto early 2000s year overall but not there yet. 1998 and 1999 both had much stronger core and real late 90s connections, although not as much as 1996-1997, but more than 2000 and 2001
