Or will 2020s movies and TV never establish their identity and be a 2010s continuation?
I am afraid that 2020s movies and TV will not have their identity developed because of how ingrained streaming has become in popular culture since the mid to late 2010s. The sequel, reboot and remake trend is long in the tooth and out of control. That should stay in the 2010s. But I am also hoping for the best.
2000s movies and TV were clear in 2001. Same with the 2010s movies and TV in 2011. That is not the case in 2021 for 2020s movies and TV. So far 2020 and 2021 seem like late 2010s extensions for movies and TV. I hope that by 2023 to 2024, 2020s movies and TV establishes their identity.

COVID is the reason pop culture has been stagnant like this. Many of the new shows that would've come out in 2020 have been postponed and canceled. That said, the 2020s will CERTAINLY be distinct with all the new streaming services out. It's just we're still early in the decade, so it's not clear what the 2020s identity will look like for film/TV yet. I think 2019, with the end of the Infinity Saga and Game of Thrones, and the launch of Disney+, might actually be the start of the 2020s TV/film era, though I don't want to call it yet.

I suppose they'll be less edgy, perhaps less self aware.
Might see the return of feel-good shallow tv shows with 0 self awareness.

You can find edgy in the 2010s in the more niche category, if you went looking for it, like Game of Thrones for example. But for the mainstream public it was largely safe, clean and preppy. Opposed to the 2000s where you had music videos like Slave for U and that was considered a normal pop music video at the time.

I'm honestly not so sure. Streaming is possibly the ultimate media experience for people based on the timeless and brilliant concept of people watching their content when, where, and how they want it. But imo, streaming is more of a core 2010s thing, especially with the runaway success of Netflix originals starting in 2013 (House of Cards and Orange is The New Black), and it'll only expand this decade with the other popular competitors like Prime Video, Disney+, HBO Max, Paramount+, and others.
Sadly, at least with the early 2020s, most corporations aren't willing to take risks on movies and TV shows, and we're still dealing with the sequels/reboots/remakes (The bland Space Jam: A New Legacy, for example) that plagued the 2010s as well. I guess familiarity with established franchises still goes a long way.

When these two things occur:
1. When consumers start demanding for something different. Part of the reason why studios and these corporations aren’t willing to innovate is because cheap nostalgia and remakes are so damn profitable. See: Space Jam
2. When Gen Z/Millenials begin to dominate the behind the scenes of filmmaking. The truth is, movies are still being dominated but Boomer and Gen X producers, directors, composers, artists, engineers, etc. A shift is coming but it takes time.

I wouldn't call it niche. TWD was also super edgy and popular. There was plenty of edginess in the 2010s, tho the 10s were wayyyy less edgy than the 00s and 90s. Tv shows were just, painfully self-aware.
