SUMMER 1998
Summer 1998 ah remember that summer guys ? I would be lying to most of you if I said it was one of my favorites. It had a very weird feeling. Teen pop was taking off and yet you still had the last vestiges of core 90s culture around. The vibe had a kind off "off vibe" if I am being honest with you. Summer 98 was also very slow and very hot. This Summer season was sure an interesting one !........so lets jump into it !!!MOVIES --------------------To be honest with you this Summer had a few high quality gems...but was mostly crap. I remember being disappointed at the selection.Mulan was pretty sick as well as Dr. Doolittle..but you could feel something was missing if I am being frank. I am not going to sh*t onthe selection but it was just barely hit the mark. Armageddon was a good movie, a thrill ride, while Something about Mary set the standard for comedy movies at the time. Video Games -------------------------------------------The N64 drought was real guys, months and months waiting for games, at this point was starving for something good. fortunately Banjoo Kazooie dropped and quenched my thirst. There was a lot of crap this summer and few good games. I remember people being so fed up with Nintendo people just played Sports games until a good game came out. Ps1had some ok games come out during this time. WWF WarZone had come out and man it sucked........................... Gamemagazines at the time were hyping Sega Dreamcast ( then called Kitana) it was all over the net as wellMusic---------------------------------------------In 97 we were heading into the teen pop era so it was obvious what Summer 98 would look like. I enjoyed themusic selection despite as much flack as I am giving this summer. There was definitely something for everyone. The radio at this time painfully overplayed Will Smith. I am serious like they played him WAY 2 much lol
Television -----------------------------------------------------------------
TV was in MEGA Free fall at this time scrambling what was going to be next. There were rumors of ABC canceling TGIF due to aging demographicsand low ratings. So ABC did the unthinkable..brought back the Olsen twins for a new show on the block and advertising the LIVING SH*t out of them.Family Matters also aired it's last episode in the Summer as weird as it sounds. CBS gave no F*cks about this show when it moved to their network.WWF was booming at the time with Stone Cold and The Undertaker storyline that culminated at the SummerSlam 98 Pay Per View. Power Rangerswas oddly kind of popular again with the IN Space season (ratings did go up) and basically saved the show. Fox Kids was still in it's Mega Power era.Nick was kind of slacking @ the time......it seems like they were auto programming things but it was passable. In conclusion -----------------------------
Like I stated before I felt this summer was kind of "meh" it was alright nothing special. I think the video games and movies really held it back. It was really a stopgap before Britney Spears & Pokemon blew up later that Fall.

The first summer of my existence. 1998 is my favorite 1990s year lmao. It was sure interesting seeing summer 98 take place, I think this was the summer that made me stay away from Nintendo for a little bit. ( aside from Pokemon) It didn't really feel like the 90s anymore but it also felt like the 90s at the same time lol

I do not think 1998 was core 1990s anymore (1993-mid 1997), but it was late 1990s and Y2K era. Of course core 1990s stuff was lingering in 1998. Long running shows like Seinfield ended. I know this is Cliche but Summer 98 had a long in the tooth feeling, not slower than Summer 2001 but pretty damn slow.

I think Pokémon stadium was released in Japan. I do remember reading about Pokémon coming soon in summer 1998 in at least 3 magazines.

Here's what I remember of summer 1998:
-Ghetto Superstar, Cruel Summer are the biggest hits of the summer played everywhere non-stop -People still wearing outdated clothes they bought in 1996 or handme downs - which was uncool in late 1998/early 1999 -Early south park merch and fandom stick out more ex. Cartman dolls and OMG they killed kenny shirts and everyone talking about gross and twisted south park is -Snes is even deader than 1997 with a a mini version, 2 new games in the stores,(NHL, Frogger and a few old classic games)and some places still renting them out. -Continuation of the mid-to-late 1997 culture and the final chapter to it (bubblegum pop, fashion, tech, internet, fads/trends of the same era as mid to late 1997) -Peak of gameboy pocket and gameboy camera is pretty popular -Tons of classic pcs games are released in mid 1998 many would be even more popular in late 1998-2000 (Unreal , Commandos, Rainbows six) -Exciting time for both N64 and PS1 and PC games -Even though all exist, curtained hair still more common than basic short haircuts, frosted tips/spiky hair, then though short basic hair is increasing since 1997. -Y2K vibes are strong but there is a core and late 90s culture still is present that just isn't the same as late 1998 and 1999. -Europe/UK are more Y2K both in fashion (fashion closer to 1999), tech (phone adoption) and music (fatboy slim, bwtiched, robbie williams stardust, etc) than the US/Canada -Nokia and standard regular size common cellphones start picking up but don't kick off until sometime august 98-feb 1999 as popular even though fully mainstream more around late 1999-2000. -Internet a lot late 1997 than 1999-2000 -MSN Messenger, email, smsing, and phones are still not mainstream -Half people have internet, other half don't -August is most Y2K part of the summer -Top hats are still cool -Pokemon is being talked about in mags and internet sites as the next big thing -Magazines are still mandatory sources for news updates -Last gasp of real grunge vibes, tamagotchi as a fad (even though they were pets were popular later) and even though kind of fading pogs, basketball cards, beanie babies and comic books as pop culture fads are still hanging around. -Last time people a few people own a saturn or defend it -Mp3s are very limited and limited to a few sites, no Mp3 players yet.

Hell, you can already trace the console’s failure to the cancellation of Sonic X-Treme. Good or not, a Sega console without a Sonic platformer (just Sonic R). Even the MASTER SYSTEM got two Sonic platformers, and it wasn’t even the current console when Sonic came out.

There are some good games like Panzer Dragoon Saga and Nights Into Dreams. Also some great ports of Sega arcade games, but beyond that, there’s really not much to the console. In fact, Sega’s mishandling of the Saturn was the reason Sonic lost popularity. In that time, people became attracted to games like Banjo-Kazooie, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon, whilst Mario cemented himself as the god of platformers after the release of Mario 64. Even today, Mario 64 is talked about more favorably than Sonic Adventure.

Sega of America had a war with Sega of Japan at the time, also 32X further crippled them lol and then add on not having a launch Sonic game it was DOA. I feel Sonic X-treme could have injected some life into the system. Sega had plans for 64 bit chip for Saturn to add on.

Gameboy camera was all the rage that thing was cool but super limited, esp the printer What I like about the Game Boy Camera personally is less the camera itself (it's a fucking Game Boy, do you expect high quality images?), and more the presentation. Kinda like how Mario Paint is really dated and limited by today's standards, but is still very fun to mess around with because of the presentation and vibe of it. Game Boy Camera could also be fucking CREEPY.
