Summer 1996 Summer 1996 ah remember that summer guys ? One of my favorite summers of the 90s despite a few setbacks ! I spent the majority of this Summer at camp in the great woods of upstate NEW YORK ! This summer you would be bombarded by DOLE VS CLINTON adverts on TV every 5 seconds. It got pretty annoying. This Summer was also very hot. Lets JUMP IN !
MOVIES --------------------
Once again I would be lying to you if I said this was the greatest movie season of all time. I will say Independence day had Dark Knight levels of hype, yes everyone was talking about and yes it was AMAZING. This summer had a crap load of kids movies out which I am sure pissed off the adult audience at the time. Me being a kid it didn't matter to me. Cable Guy was weird and quite a departure for Jim Carey, it got slammed in the reviews. I snuck into that movie while watching Matilda.
Video Games -----------------------
The hype for N64 was real and we were all waiting for it to drop in a few months. In the meantime we were playing Snes and Genesis ( some were playing Saturn & PS1) Playstation was not quite the powerhouse yet it would be in 1997. People were still at the arcade at this time. You still actually had arcades in malls in 96. I played Playstation for the first time in 96 ( it was a demo of Tekken 2) I thought it was mind blowing. MK 3 Ultimate had dropped on SNES and I was having a blast.
Music---------------------------------------------
This was literally it for Grunge, it was already fading out. Very long in the tooth. Tons of fake rent a band clones floating on the airwaves and on MTV at this time. Tupac was everywhere and the Macarena song and dance were inescapable. Music at this time still had that chill laid back vibe.
Television -----------------------------------------------------------------
Reruns Reruns and Reruns...but no it was not that bad to be honest. Nick was in it's prime despite the reruns. I was ok with that ! Power Rangers ZEO reruns were on Fox Kids (but at this time Power Rangers was seen as washed) WCW and the whole nWo storyline with Hulk Hogan turning bad got MEGA ratings and everyone at camp was talking about it. Oh and Stone Cold Steve Austin became a thing with "Attitude" while I was at camp as well. Wrestling in general exploded at this time.
In Conclusion -----------------------------------------------------------------
A pretty good summer of the 90s. Top 3 of the 90s if I am being frank with you all. It had a very laid back vibe..however that could be due to the music at the time. You have to remember in the states Teen Pop did not blow up yet. The only thing really holding this Summer back is the extensive influx of reruns on tv and the Clinton vs Dole ads that made me want to jab my eye out.

Summer 1996 could be the last time period that the mid 1990s peaked and culture was in the classic 1990s. I like the music and fashion of this year. The earliest Y2K and early 2000s influences can be traced back to 1996, maybe even 1994 or 1995. What I like about 1996 is that it started the transition into the late 1990s. Summer 96 did have a this "classic mid 90s" vibe to it despite Grunge declining. There was a ton of excitement about Nintendo 64 releasing.

Who would have thought that 2Pac would pass away that September 13th? I wonder if summer 1996 had an ominous “something big is going to happen” vibe or a premonition. I read stories online about people having premonitions of September 11th, 2001. I find premonitions very interesting and scary. I was there the day N64 came out despite me getting it in Fall 97 shortly after getting ps1. My friend was picking his up and let me tell you the line was out the door. Summer 96 kind of had that 2006/2016 feeling " this is the last classic summer" type of feeling

1996 is still better than both summer 1997, 1998, 1999 which felt more artificial and missing something in comparison. Summer 1996 was the last pure 90s period of the 90s and the last summer to have that classic 90s feel, even though summer 1997 is very close. Spring/summer 1996 the few incoming late 90s elements were starting to be a bit more visible than 94 and 95 and by august 1996 the late 90s vibe had a lot more shape, even though it wasn't exactly there yet.
One of the best summers of the 90s imo:
1. Summer 1991 and 1990 2. Summer 1992 3. Summer 1993 4. Summer 1994 5. Summer 1995 6. Summer 1996

The movies Titor mentioned are a big part of why I consider the latter half of the 90s to be the most kid-oriented era in pop culture history.

Though I will say, the biggest kid movie of 1996, Hunchback of Notre Dame, also has a reputation of being Disney's darkest movie. That IMO helped even out the year. I'd say summer 1996 was pretty good for movies all things considered, but it wasn't like summer 1994 when The Lion King and Forrest Gump were out.

What do you think of Hercules? wasn't impressed by Hercules either, but its miles better than Tarzan and Mulan I'm curious what's your favorite Disney movie? But I kinda get the impression you're more of a Pixar/Dreamworks person (especially since your favorite decade, the 2000s, was when where Disney was NOT doing well).

I really like that movie too. I like 90s Disney movies a lot better than mid-late 00s and 10s Disney movies. I actually really like early 2000s Disney up until Treasure Planet, and after that is where it really goes downhill for me. The 2000s was definitely more about Pixar, Dreamworks, and even Blue Sky than it was Disney. Whereas Disney made a comeback in the 2010s, with Illumination also being strong.

Election summers always have annoying political ads everywhere. Summer 2008, 2016, and 2020 were easily the worst in that regard.
