2016-present is definitely the biggest rollercoaster one, with the absolute BIGGEST of the entire 21st century being the COVID-19 pandemic that we are currently dealing with. We are currently in a rollercoaster era. I wouldn't call 2014 onwards stable, especially with the rise of the alt-right in 2014 thanks to the Gamergate controversy. 2014-2015 wasn't as tumultuous as 2016 onwards though. 2004 wasn't a tumultuous year, and 9/11 now felt well behind. I think 2004 should be grouped with 2005 and 2006 under the stable section. 2007 was the start of the recession but not as tumultuous as 2008-2009. 2010 wasn't that tumultuous, it only had the Haiti earthquake and that was really it. 2011 felt more tumultuous with the Arab Spring and Occupy protests. 1999 and 2000 are years I'd consider tumultuous due to Y2K and Columbine in the former year, and the dot-com burst and 2000 election in the latter year. End of the world bullshit aside, 2012 wasn't that tumultuous, especially outside the US where it was actually a very peaceful year. The London Olympics brought everyone together and there was a sense of unity that didn't exist in the latter half of the 2010s. I'd say the entire era from roughly 1993 to 1998 was quite peaceful, 1999 to 2000 were more tumultuous but a walk in the park compared to what came after. 2001 to 2003 were indeed very tumultuous years. 2004 through 2007 was the most peaceful part of the 2000s, with a couple bumps here and there. 2008 and 2009 were way more tumultuous again, then 2010 through 2013 were relatively peaceful, until 2014. 2014-2015 was not as peaceful as 2010-2013, but not as tumultuous as 2016 onwards, similar to what we saw with 1999-2000. 2016-2019 in turn wasn't as tumultuous as what we would see with the COVID pandemic. 2020 and 2021 have proven to be EXTREMELY tumultuous, arguably the most tumultuous since at least the 1960s, if not 1940s.
Eras ranked, most to least peaceful: 1. Mid 1990s 2. Late 1990s 3. Mid 2000s 4. Early 2010s 5. Mid 2010s 6. Late 2000s 7. Late 2010s 8. Early 1990s 9. Early 2000s 10. Early 2020s
Most peaceful decade overall: 1990s Most tumultuous decade overall: 2010s

We actually had to make up "end of the world" scenarios for the late 90s and early 2010s because of how peaceful they were, and how bored we were of the mundane peace of these eras. The Y2K scare and Mayan Apocalypse scare respectively. The former did have SOME basis in reality but only based on fears of what could happen if computers went haywire during Y2K, which would lead to some people on life support for example dying because the computers running them stopped working, airports reading the wrong time, an economic crash. Nothing really happened though, because of how vigilant we were in making SURE nothing would happen. And the Mayan Apocalpyse was just silly. The also peaceful mid 2000s had some fearing the world would end on June 6th, 2006, simply because it said 6/6/06. I'm not even kidding.
