NOTE: just my opinion, and feel free to give your thoughts below 1950s - New Jersey (quintessentially American, suburbs, Frank Sinatra, has the most diners per capita, and they STILL do self-service like was popular back in the 50s, almost nowhere else does that) 1960s - California (surfing and hippies, enough said) 1970s - Northeast (very urban vibe in general, and the Northeast IS the most urban region of the US, disco, Rocky, The Godfather, Ralph Bakshi’s movies, All In the Family, a band literally called BOSTON was one of the biggest bands to come out of this decade) 1980s - California (1984 Olympics, Ronald Reagan, Sunset Strip hair metal, blockbuster movies, Spielberg’s movies) 1990s - West Coast (Grunge, Gangsta Rap, Frasier, and Microsoft, Matt Groening was from Oregon) 2000s - Southern US (Outkast, tropical/beach aesthetics were popular, crunk and snap were huge, homophobia was rampant) 2010s - West Coast (social media companies, liberalism, and hipsters)

1960s - California
1970s - NYC (lots of iconic NYC movies are from the 70s, NY was known for high crime during this period, NYC almost went bankrupt which symbolizes the horrible economy of the 70s, the crack/cocaine epidemic began, 1977 NYC blackout)
1980s - Miami (Scarface, Miami Vice, GTA Vice City, etc)
1990s - Suburban Pacific Northwest (goes with laid back vibe of the 90s)
2000s - Hollywood (materialism and “bling”, celebrity culture being very popular, everything is very flashy in general)
2010s - Brooklyn or SoCal (two hotspots for hipsters and social media influencers respectively)

How does Texas define the 70s? If anything, it would define the 80s better, as Dallas was a very popular show in that decade. But overall, California and Florida are the two states that define the 80s for me.

iCarly is from the late 00s and took place in Washington. Perhaps an early indication for how big a role the Pacific Northwest would play in 2010s culture.

Here’s another aspect of Jersey that’s 50s as hell - the first drive-in theater in the US was from New Jersey So yeah, there simply isn’t a more 50s state out there than New Jersey

Even the county names like Essex, Sussex, Middlesex. LMAO

So far for the 2020s, the Deep South or Florida. Anywhere in the rural Bible Belt really.

1920s - Illinois (Chicago being the epicenter of organised crime during Prohibition)
1930s - Oklahoma
1940s - Great Lakes (of course, I would have picked somewhere overseas such as Japan, Russia, or Germany, but if we’re talking about what US region epitomised the spirit of the American Homefront most, I’d point to the Great Lakes/Upper Midwest, the most heavily industrialised region of the country)
1950s - Deep South
1960s - California
1970s - Pennsylvania (Philadelphia in particular, being that it was center of the USA’s bicentennial in 1976, the setting of the popular 70s movie “Rocky”, and the birthplace of disco)
1980s - Miami
1990s - Pacific Northwest

2020s: Texas. And that isn't a good thing. Either Texas, Florida, or Mississippi will be the bigoted conservative hellhole of the 2020s, probably just all three

So far, Minnesota, or should I say Minneapolis, has had more attention than anywhere else in the 2020s, due to the George Floyd protests. But it’s not exactly the good kind of attention. IMO, there’s a difference between places that did well in a certain time, and places that merely got lots of attention, and whilst nowhere has truly done well during these trying times, we can look at COVID cases per capital for info. States like Hawaii, Northern New England states like Vermont and Maine, and Pacific Northwest states like Washington and Oregon did the best during the pandemic in regards to not spreading COVID as much as say, Florida or Tennessee. I think those states will emerge from this decade the strongest. Vermont in particular has low population density and is quite rural, very environmentally friendly, and has the least COVID cases per capita. I think of all the states, Vermont has had the most success of any state during the 2020s, and their close proximity to cities like Boston and Montreal means many people who don’t want to deal with city life anymore may consider moving there.
