A few years ago on here we were discussing the absence of superstars in the late '10s. It had been a long time before there was anybody in pop music big enough to be a contemporary with the likes of Lady Gaga and Ke$ha or last generations' Britney and Christina. I think the bedroom pop era has changed that.
Would you say Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo have reached that status?

You can combine Billie's, Olivia's and BTS's levels of fame and they still wouldn't match the level of fame Gaga had in 2011... Let alone Britney in 1999 or Michael in the 80s.
Billie and Olivia are big... But not that big.

I think McDonalds promoting BTS and hearing about them constantly on the internet is a sign they're pretty damn big. They're also one of the best-selling music artists of the 2010s.

I agree that Billie and Olivia are having their moment, they've both had a number 1 hit iirc. But they aren't anywhere near the ubiquity or star power of Lady Gaga in 2008-2011 or Britney in 1999-2003, partially because these two artists aren't particularly groundbreaking like Gaga or Britney. The other reason is due to the very nature of the internet, in the current era it's hard to have a monopoly on pop culture since everything is so fragmented now. Part of this is also in the current labels being extremely uncreative and not being able to adapt in the internet age. Sure, they have number ones and have large fanbases, but they are far from being true cultural resets.
To this day nobody has captured GP like those two artists. They try, but it's hard in the current climate. Perhaps they could announce a live-streamed music video with high anticipation, get everyone to talk about it. Make a deal with YouTube or TikTok and live stream the music video on the front page à la Thriller on MTV. I've never seen a pop artist do this before, billions of people use those two apps. Imagine the traffic you'd get by being at the front of YouTube.

They're not Britney level "inescapable" Let me just say in the early 2000s every channel you turned on had something to do with Britt, Turn to CBS ( tour commercial) turn to MTV and MTV 2 ( Slave 4 u video) turn to Comedy Central ( Crossroads movie ad) turn to Cartoon Network (some Britney Spears toy) Turn to Nick (taking over the Snick u pick live) turn to Disney (some behind the scenes advert for tour) Go to times square you see her face on a pepsi ad billboard... You could not go anywhere without seeing her face. Legit was INESCAPABLE lol

Imagine the traffic you'd get by being at the front of YouTube. Right on the mark like usual, xamo. But by definition, yes, they are pop superstars as of right now. Billie and Olivia are still having their peak moment in the spotlight, but they didn't have the monocultural aspect of pop culture the same way late 90s/early 2000s artists had with MTV, terrestrial radio, physical record copies from stores, magazines, TV commercials, billboards, etc. So I picture them as being more of standouts from the ever-growing pool of popular artists from the Internet.

Not in the same way as superstars were back then. The last real "superstar" was probably Lady Gaga because even though she didn't last very long she made constant headlines and everyone knew who she was. This isn't the same case with Billie Eilish and Rodrigo, despite their number 1 hits. They are more on the level Taylor Swift and Rihanna was. The fact that they are so big has more to do with the very few pop singers in the spotlight these days. You just have those two, Dua Lipa, and Justin Bieber, and no other pop singers are really popular right now besides them.
