NSYNC and BTS are both boy bands, with the former being teen pop and the latter being K-Pop. They seem to be popular with preteen and teen girls. NSYNC was famous in the late 1990s and the very early 2000s. BTS has been famous since the late 2010s. They performed for New Years in Times Square when ringing in 2018. Both had Happy Meal toys made out of them. As John Titor has mentioned teen pop fatigue set in around the 4th quarter of 2000, started declining in 2001 before dying off by late 2001. NSYNC split in 2002. Do you foresee BTS splitting up, K-Pop fatigue setting in and declining? If so, when do you think it will happen? Do you think K-Pop will remain popular, mature, evolve into another genre or influence other music genres of the 2020s? Is K-Pop comparable to teen pop? Has K-Pop reached the point of over saturation? I think teen pop and K-Pop are somewhat comparable for their upbeat and cheesy nature. Teen pop seemed more popular than K-Pop does now. I guess that has a lot to do with the lack of monoculture today. Teen pop seemed inescapable in the late 1990s and very early 2000s. I suppose people who dislike K-Pop could easily tune that out. I predict K-Pop backlash and the genre sounding “long out of tooth” may happen as early as late 2021 or as late as early 2024. Only John Titor can answer this one

Only John Titor can answer this one I do see them splitting up eventually, right now there is sort of a BTS backlash due to their shady business practices ( hiring fan girl stand in crowds for VMAS, releasing instrumentals and dual deluxe versions of the same songs for higher chart placement) not to mention they were caught buying likes and views on their youtube, which youtube eventually removed the extra viewing numbers. " “Butter,” like the big BTS hits that preceded it, sits at #1 right now mostly because BTS have effectively mobilized their tireless fan army. BTS sold downloads of “Butter” for 69 cents. They also sold an instrumental version. That’s 69 cents, too, and its sales count towards the chart fortunes of BTS. (There are also physical editions of the single, but those won’t count on the charts until they ship.) BTS fans are extremely plugged into the whole pop-chart thing, and they’re invested in helping the group get to #1 as many times as possible. If that means buying two different versions of the same song for 69 cents a pop, plenty of them are happy to do it. If you look at the charts, then, you’re going to get a completely distorted idea of how popular BTS actually are"

Yeah, I read in other forums that Butter is not really a legitimate #1 due to mass buying from die-hard stans in their official website.

Easy question. HELL NO!!! They may be popular right now but their music will never reach the level of NSYNC. That's blasphemy. NSYNC actually had style and originality. There's no denying that BTS has the charisma and charm to get over with the fans but they IMO don't have the IT factor like NSYNC and most celebrities of the late 90's/early 2000's had. Sorry. Just not even a comparison.

BTS is more on the level of 98 degrees. There's no comparison to the Y2K era boybands in the current era.
I do think Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo are closer to being today's Britney and Christina than BTS is to NSync, but even they aren't quite there.

I don’t remember the “NSYNC era” or whatever, but most girls around my age don’t really listen to BTS, let alone K-pop in general. I think K-pop is actually less popular with teenage girls than the Internet makes it seem. I knew about 4-5 girls in my class who actually loved K-pop and that’s about it.

I honestly think that NSYNC's popularity was bigger than BTS's even if they weren't as long going as a group than BTS. Most of their hits were always well known especially to NSYNC fans. Now don't get me wrong BTS has a crazy fanbase but at NSYNC's height of their popularity which was around 2000/2001, it seemed bigger because their songs were promoted more than BTS's. I don't know many songs from them and if I do its only because of Youtube and with the decline of TV which ultimately is being replaced by streaming services its hard for me to see BTS in the same league as NSYNC was back in the late 90s and early 2000s.

The thing is, no star today can ever compare to the celebrities of the early 2000s. Back then you didn't have social media so celebrities were the main thing people occupied themselves with. Being a famous celebrity is less of a big deal these days so it will never compare to the celebrities in the past.
