You made this thread twice. Anyways, some things that define this year include COVID-19, the recent election of a Democratic president, the continuation of the COVID recession, and TikTok, etc. To find the opposite, I'd need a year that involved the election of a Republican president, economic growth, lack of TikTok, no pandemic, etc. Whilst 2017 might seem like the answer, there are some things that are in 2017 that are also in 2021. The kind of alt-right culture was even stronger in 2017, the MeToo movement started that year, people were addicted to social media, and rock music wasn't popular. Similarities are the election of a Republican government, economic growth, and no news of a pandemic. 2001 is ruled out because of 9/11. Then there's 1989, which ALMOST fits. There are some problems though. George HW Bush's presidency only continued Reagan's preexisting conservative era, rather than ushering in a whole new one. In addition, rap was gaining serious popularity, which is a definite contrast to the modern day. 1981 only doesn't fit because of the economic recession that happened in the early 80s, but otherwise, there are definite similarities. Which brings me to 1969. Could this year be it? I'm fairly confident it was. Rock was very popular, rap and social media did not exist. Culture was very liberal, we elected a Republican instead of a Democrat, the economy was doing great, there were no pandemics to speak of, theaters were thriving (in part because there was no home media), people used landlines instead of cellphones. So that's my answer for now, the polar opposite of 2021, is 1969.

NVM I think I'm going to reconsider 1969, I think the opposite instead would have to be 1989.

2000 honestly, lots of optimism and excitement especially because the Y2K bug didn't end the world.

People were still excited for the 21st century and the 3rd millennium. Everything seemed exciting, cutting-edge, cool and futuristic. Too bad I only turned 1 and not 11 or 21 in 1999. Now in 2021 people are depressed and stuck at home because of COVID, looking back to the past. Funny how 1999 and 2021 share the same calendar. 1999 is also regarded as one of the best movie years along with 1994 and 1995.

To the people that experienced this, lucky people. I would love to be 20 years old in 1999. A boy can dream
