Disney wasn't doing well in the 80s. I like to call the 70s and 80s era of Disney the Dark Age, and it's not just because this was a bad era for Disney or that their movies were performing badly, it's because their movies were very dark. Animated movies during the 70s and 80s in general were very dark - think stuff like The Brave Little Toaster or Watership Down. I actually personally think Ralph Bakshi's movies like Fritz the Cat were the roots of these darker animated movies, + the whole "New Hollywood" mentality that pushed for edgier film.

I actually personally think Ralph Bakshi's movies like Fritz the Cat were the roots of these darker animated movies, + the whole "New Hollywood" mentality that pushed for edgier film. pretty much, I was born right when the NEW Disney Renaissance was kicking off, so to me as a kid Disney was always "king" those 80s movies sucked aside from The Little mermaid and Who Framed Roger Rabbit ( a Disney / WB joint movie)
