What I mean by this are times you felt there is no turning back from the changes done.
2001 - 9/11, terrorism, strict airport security measures, wars
2006 - We unquestionably entered Web 2.0 internet with social media, iPods and cellphones ubiquitous. YouTube started getting popular. Myspace was still the number 1 website, but Facebook started gaining traction once it opened up to everyone. PS3 standardized online gaming and backwards compatibility, stamping them official. Nerd or geek culture and hipsters slowly started becoming more acceptable. Physical media started declining with the popularity of iTunes. Tower Records, Ritz Camera, Suncoast and Sam Goody closed as proof. Digital photography became standard. 5th generation gaming consoles and VHS were nonexistent or extremely rare.
2014 - Smartphones become common. Streaming takes off. Blockbuster has closed most locations. Politics becomes toxic.
2020 - COVID-19, quarantine, lockdown, online learning and working

I feel like going from 2006 to 07 was a much bigger shift than going from 2005 to 06 (two years that pretty much felt the same).

I feel like going from 2006 to 07 was a much bigger shift than going from 2005 to 06 (two years that pretty much felt the same). I think I agree. The first iPhone dropped on June 29, 2007. Facebook really took off in Spring 2007. Nerd culture became even more acceptable by late 2007 with the debut of Big Bang Theory which defined the 2010s. Kim Kardashian, also another 2010s show, began that summer or fall. Changes that were made with Disney Channel in 2006 left their mark in 2007. 2005 and 2006 for the most part felt identical with 2006 being slightly more modern. I cannot distinguish much from those years. 2005 and 2006 are quintessential 2000s years. XBox 360 launched in November 2005 with the same capabilities as the PS3. 2006 is overall culturally mid 2000s along with 2005 and late 2004. 2007 is culturally late 2000s overall along with 2008 and early 2009. I remember late 2007 feeling different from even 2006.

It's mainly going from say, mid 2006 to mid 2007 which felt like a big shift (late 2007 had a lot of change too).

Yeah it really was, I have been known on here for dubbing this era " Dark & Digital era" 06 - majority of 2007 - Facebook opens up in Fall 06 - frutiger aero design more commonplace - The WB network closes while The CW opens - Launch of Iphone - WWE RAW gets new logo - Launch of Blackberry Pearl - Britney Spears meltdown - launch of TMZ live - Death of Anna Nicole Smith - launch of Windows Vista - Get a Mac ads launch - Scene takes over emo - End of The Sopranos - End of The OC - End of King of Queens - Toonami rebrands with Thomas the Tank Engine Tom - MTV's TRL becomes partially pre taped due to Youtube ( was suppose to be canceled in spring 2007 but held on a little longer) - Launch of Playstation 3 & Wii - End of Gilmore girls- Murder Suicide of Chris Beniot - End of Thats So Raven

I remember in late 2006 the Blackberry pearl started becoming real popular, no one really had it yet but you did see some people on the streets with it Around December 2006 to early 2007 ( before the iphone launched)
Samsung blackjacks started popping up
So even if the iphone never was released.. this was the direction we were heading regardless.

True. Also I remember Nokia or the latest phones in general, not just early smartphones, being a bit different than earlier and having a early or proto smartphone type interface or features from like 2006 to 2010/2011. It just wasn’t the same as the earlier in the early or mid 2000s, they felt more evolved even if a lot of features weren’t used.

I def remember this because I was in a Cingular store at the mall around November 06 and saw regular phones that actually seemed quasi futuristic looking.

slashpop even at the January 2007 iphone keynote Steve Jobs even talked about how Smartphones were becoming the new thing in the 2006 year, so while Nightmare is correct it took until 2011 for it to "cross over" Smartphones were starting to integrate themselves in society as early as fall 2006.
