The blending of many worlds, 16 bit, the launch of 64 bit. This year had something for everyone. Literally one of the more balanced gaming years in history (even with it's misses!) If you were still holding on to SNES or Genesis there was something for you ! If you just got PS1 or N64 there was something for you ! As far as a gaming year that fulls rich and full of balance 1996 IS IT !!!!

I always consider 1996 to be a trailblazer year for Y2K Aesthetics Video Games. Video Games then was a lot of fun.

kind of, as a kid growing up in the 90s Summer 1995 felt the most "90s" to me, but 1996 had elements of oncoming late 90s culture (Fall 96 is actually num the late 90s) - Rise of Stone Cold Steve Austin - Rise of nWo and Wrestling in general - 5th generation kicks off official for video games - Launch of N64 - fashion - Teen witch craze ( Sabrina) - The Election - AOL Internet hype fully kicks off - Dragon Ball Z & Sailor Moon debuts in the USA in syndication ( before Toonami) - rapid decline of Grunge - hype for Final Fantasy 7 starts and then in Japan you have Pokemon Green and Red For the most part 96 did feel 90s

Most of the year felt the same as 1995 (and the latter half of 1994). Going from early/mid 1996 to say 1998 was a pretty huge change IMO.

1996 was a great year for gaming. I think this was also the peak year for the Sega Saturn.

Sega Saturn had some amazing games, unfort the system was a flop lol This guy in my old apartment complex bought a Saturn on launch day like an idiot instead of waiting for Playstation or n64. I always ragged on him about it.

This is easily one of the biggest years in gaming history, as far as genuinely revolutionary games are concerned. Super Mario 64? Revolutionized the 3D platformer genre and how 3D games in general should control. Resident Evil? Pretty much started the survival horror genre as we know it? Quake? The first true 3D FPS, and would go on to give rise to things like online multiplayer, speedrunning, and the highly influential Quake engine. Tomb Raider? Highly innovative as far as 3D level design and graphics are concerned. Crash Bandicoot? It gave the PlayStation a mascot, and he became one of the most beloved and iconic video game characters of all time. 3D in general was the big thing in 1996. That shows in titles like Sonic 3D Blast. Have you seen the Genesis version of that? It's fucking mindblowing as far as the graphics are concerned, it really pushed the Genesis to its limits. This is easily one of my favorite years in gaming history, because of just how fucking innovative it was. The only downside? Bubsy 3D came out that year. That is one of the worst games of all time.

Sonic 3D Blast was technically a very impressive game. That cutscene at the start was amazing. This is not a Sega CD game, not a 32X game, it's a NATIVE Genesis game, and that's what really impresses me (and also makes me wonder if the Sega 32X was really that necessary). It's too unfortunate the gameplay isn't that great. That's the main theme of video games from 1996, the 3D boom really took off that year, as did the PS1 and N64.

It was a pretty good when it first came out, I remember going to someone's hosue at school in 96 being super impressive by panzer dragoon and nights and die hard trilogy . Tbh after a year or so into if you could afford japanese import games it was pretty kick ass system better the n64 for sure.
