Worst
1) 2000 - Did not really establish the 2000s identity asides a few stuff like the PS2 release, Dotcom bubble burst leading to the early 2000s recession, Bush and reality TV. Late 1990s were clearly past their peak, but a lot of movies and gaming scream late 1990s. Y2K era slowly started to die down that March.
2) 2003 - Early 2000s were past their peak since around January to March 2003. Mid 2000s technically began that May, but not culturally. Early 2000s influences started to become watered down. Mid and core 2000s influences were coming in like That's So Raven, 50 Cent, Paris Hilton, crunk, emo, surfer fashion and more. Refer to John Titor's Fake mid 2000s thread. Mid 2000s identity was not yet solidified until around July to September 2004. Cartoon Network Powerhouse era was winding down.
3) July 2005 thru June 2006 - Mid 2000s identity got obnoxious and annoying around this time with snap and ringtone rap. Spongebob starts sucking.
4) 2007 - Mid 2000s were past their peak. Core and mid 2000s influences, shows, artists and celebrities were starting to fade. Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon and Disney Channel declined some more. Crappy shows like Big Bang Theory, Kardashians and debatably iCarly took over late that year. Endless Spongebob repeats on Nick.
5) 2009 - Late 2000s were past their peak. Early 2010s were yet to peak. 2009 is half late 2000s and half early 2010s culturally. The year does has a vibe of electropop music playing in an empty mall with bunch of closed down and boarded up businesses. Like slashpop and John Titor have said before, off-brand chips and soda feeling.
6) 2015 - Mid 2010s identity got obnoxious and annoying with hipster and or yuccie oversaturation.
7) 2017 - First late 2010s year politically and debatably the last core 2010s year. 2017 seemed directionless culturally. First full year of Trump's presidency. Mid 2010s influences long in the tooth. Soundclap emo trap garbage really took over this year. 2017 got worse as it went on, with late 2017 being the worst part of 2017. Even the early and mid parts of 2017 are irredeemable. SJW vs Alt Right and liberals vs conservatives wars at their peak.
8) 2020 - I cannot say that 2020 was late 2010s or early 2020s culturally. The year deserves to be quarantined. Trump was still president. The PS5 was not out for most of the year. Yet COVID blew up in March 2020 with lockdowns.
Best
1) 2002 - Early 2000s were at their peak. Not Y2K era anymore, but not core 2000s either. I still put 2002 closer to the late 1990s and Y2K era than I do to the rest of the 2000s. Late 1990s and Y2K influences and shows were still prominent. Cartoon Network Powerhouse Era was still going strong. A huge improvement over 2001.
2) July 2004 through June 2005 - Perfect balance of early and mid 2000s trends, while being predominately mid 2000s culturally. An improvement over 2003 and first half of 2004. Mid 2000s identity was not obnoxious or overbearing unlike late 2005 and early 2006.
3) 2008 - Peak late 2000s year. No longer core 2000s, but not yet electro-pop era. An improvement over 2007.
4) 2011 - Peak early 2010s year. Not core 2010s yet.
5) 2014 - Mid 2010s identity is still exciting. Lots of early 2010s influences linger. Before Trump announced his run.
6) 2019 - SJW vs Alt Right and liberals vs conservatives wars tone down a bit. Emo Soundcloud trap garbage not as prominent as 2017 and most of 2018. Some early 2020s influences come in. 2010s franchises start to end.
