Lately, I have been analyzing the Pop Culture of the Late 2010s. Despite this era having a strong and consistent era, there was some minor differences between 2017 and 2019. More specifically in Western Pop Music. . Somewhere around the end of 2018/start of 2019, there was a small shift. Pop Music feels more upbeat and lighthearted(for the most part) in the second half than the first.
Late 2010s Part 1:
Late 2010s Part 2:
IMO, I consider the Late 2010s to be from Very Late 2016 through the start of 2020.

Idk why people consider late 10s music to be "sad" and "gloomy". it's true that there were many slow and downbeat songs in the late 10s (juice wrld, indie pop) but the biggest hits were always upbeat (shape of you, closer, despacito)

In comparison the typical electropop song sat around 120 BPM. And really they're not upbeat at all. They're just two big slogs of songs. THIS is what I call upbeat music:

I won't call Closer happy either, there's a persistent melancholy to its tone throughout the song. Shape of You is just a dumb sex song. Maybe the late 2010s might have actually skrewed our perception of what upbeat, happy songs actually are after all considering how slow and sad most popular songs were, that even a tiny bit of rhythm means upbeatness in comparison...

Late 2010s did have some dark vibes, I think a lot has to do with it is Trump tbh, even if he didn't get elected

Yeah all the eras of the 2010s (or any decade really) have 2 different parts to them. The music of those eras most clearly shows this
Early 10s part 1 (2010- mid 2011):
Early 10s part 2 (late 2011-early 2013):
Mid 10s part 1 (late 2013-2014):
Mid 10s part 2 (2015-2016):
Late 10s part 1 (2017- mid 2018):
Late 10s part 2 (mid-late 2018-2019):

Lo-fi and bedroom pop blew up in 2018/19, which in my opinion is why the era has a dark and gloomy perception. While there were still plenty of upbeat songs on the charts, people tend to associate eras with whatever sound is cutting edge and not what is the status quo. Example: The early 2010s were known for electropop and the emergence of trap despite also being the last hurrah for post grunge and ringtone rap.

Controversial opinion, but I don’t think the late 2010’s had two faces. It all felt like one short era to me. There were some cultural differences between 2017 and 2019, but not really enough to consider the late 2010’s a split era IMO.

People were already complaining about pop music being slow and sad back in 2016 lol, don't trip I feel like the people in this website really try to over exaggerate the difference between the different eras of 2010s sometimes, possibly because it's the last decade so far. I highly doubt people will care about any of this 10 or 20 years from now

The era that started in 2019 was the fake early '20s. Basically the early '20s without the pandemic and other stuff that came in 2020.

I highly doubt people will care about any of this 10 or 20 years from now Considering people still care about how different the 2000s eras were, I highly doubt it lol

Sometimes people try to imply that the 10s were the most consistent decade ever, and other times they want to pretend there was a cultural shift every 3 years... Which is it?
