Apparently something like internet news via TV called teletext was already mainstream in the mid 1970s to around the 90s in the UK and Europe and to some in the US. Watch more here:

Our old TV in the 2000s had teletext, it was an useful way to quickly get info over programs and even random stuff like flight hours without having to boot up the computer (which took so long to start back then).
I think the last few channels that offered teletext services all discontinued it in the 2010s because it was completely pointless at that point.
