I want to say around 2016 and 2017 when a bunch of mall anchor department stores closed, leaving gaping holes in malls.
When would you say YouTubers recording stores closing, urban exploration and abandoned places became a thing?
My guess is also around 2016 and 2017 for that too.

Not really sure what you mean here. Are you talking about major store lines closing? Well, many of them got liquidated with the post-2008 recession period.

Honestly I never noticed a shortage of clothing stores from 2008 to the present. It may just be certain malls or stores. Recording abandoned building has been a thing since the last 10 or something years. No real set date imo

Recording abandoned building has been a thing since the last 10 or something years. No real set date imo I agree. Mall performance also depends on the area I think. I’d say by the late 2000s is when malls became all about clothing stores. Malls used to offer a diverse array of stores, pet, music, movies, games, toys, specialty, art and more in the early 2000s and back. I can vaguely remember the early 2000s, not as crystal clear as mid 2000s and onwards. I’m sure it was better in the 1960s through the 1990s. I also prefer the designs of stores from the early 2000s and back. The stores tried to be unique and stand out instead of being generic clones of other stores or appearing like every other store. Back then, it seemed like malls had it all. I think COVID made it worse for malls. Malls will have to innovate or they’ll sink. I guess I’ve been noticing more abandoned buildings being recorded in the past 5 or so years because of the increased store closures and vacancies. I’d say that is on par with the Great Recession or worse. Because COVID has put a halt to everything, vacancies will take many years to fill up. Certain malls have just become more gentrified or more high end or female clothing focused but mega malls usually have everything and more compared than the 90s to early 2000s minus the 90s necessities. Those haven’t gone away. Just look at countries like Dubai for example as well. 90s malls were also based on a different market and lack of internet ordering being a thing or physical media dying . Physical stores like book stores, movie stores, music stores, kiosks with magazines, baseball card and comic book stores ( comic and card market was different then bigger than today) had much more importance and the fact that we weren’t as globalized back then plays a bigger role when it comes to many things outside of that

Great list! I think Borders could also be added to the list. They closed the last of their stores around August to September 2011, right when 13 year old me was starting 8th grade. I thought Sam Goody and Suncoast closed fall 2006. Ritz Camera also shut down in 2006. Libby Lu closed in 2008. Imaginarium closed in 2003. Discovery closed in 2007. as someone who was at the mall every weekend from 2001-2009 it was unreal to see the changes happen

I think certain malls becoming gentrified or stripping down characteristics that made them unique and different from other malls also leads to their downfall. Now a days malls just look like every other mall, no character, just monochrome and bland like around the mid to late 2000s to mid 2010s to present. Hopefully once the 2020s kicks into gear, that can change. Physical media was still relevant in the early 2000s. Online shopping was around in the mid to late 1990s and the early 2000s, but didn’t make a dent until around the mid to late 2000s-mid 2010s. There still are big malls out there, just more gentrified malls aren’t dead. Never really died.

as someone who was at the mall every weekend from 2001-2009 it was unreal to see the changes happen Same. I was disappointed and bitter about the changes. I can say with confidence that 2000s was apart of the golden age of malls, albeit tail end. Iconic 2000s movies like Mean Girls filmed mall scenes. I’m sure more early to mid 2000s movies filmed mall scenes. Going to the malls in the 2000s was special. Maybe it was because I was a kid. Variety of mall stores peaked in the early 2000s. Mall traffic peaked in the mid 2000s. What a shame. In 2009, malls were probably not even a quarter of what they were back in 2001. They were a shell of their former selves. It was a world of difference. According to Dan Bell of the infamous Dead Malls youtube channel, Mall foot traffic in America peaked in Fall 2005 and declined every year since.
