Smartphones didn't become mainstream until 2011. Myspace took off around 2005. False Myspace took off Q4 of 2004, receipts - I was in High school and watched it happen - It was constantly being mentioned on the radio - Was constantly being mentioned on E! and MTV - Most myspace sign up dates direct to November 2004 - Dane Cook got popular from Myspace in that little span in 2004 - you are googling myspace which says from 2005 it jumped off which is not true ( News Corp bought it in 2005 that is all) - The rise of emo as we knew it and myspace happened at the same time - My school started banning Myspace from their wifi (many other schools did as well, resulting is us having to use Proxy sites like Hide my As*) - the T-mobile stores had a giant "Sidekicks compatible with Myspace sticker in the window" Xmas 2004 - In 2005 it got even more popular, however Late 2004 is when it started becoming a pop culture phenomenon. This is what I mean when I said you are way off sometimes with start dates of trends. As for Smartphones yes they did become mainstream in 2011, 2006 brought us the blackberry pearl and 2007 brought us the iphone. More people had the Blackberry from late 2006 - 2011 then a Iphone. >False Myspace took off Q4 of 2004 This is what I mean when I said you are way off sometimes with start dates of trends. Except it isn't because I said around 2005 lmao. Does 3 months really matter that much to you? > 2006 brought us the blackberry pearl and 2007 brought us the iphone. The Blackberry Pearl may have been considered a smartphone back then but isn't by todays standards. It is not touchscreen and used an oldschool keyboard for inputs. The Iphone is the start of the smartphone revolution but they weren't mainstream in 08 so it didn't account for anything back then. If we're going purely by release date then why start it at 08 and not start it in 07?

If we're going purely by release date then why start it at 08 and not start it in 07? Myspace did not start to get popular right as January 1, 2005 hit hahahaha. Myspace came out in late 2003, and did not get popular until late 2004. In November 2004, number of Myspace users grew to 5 million. It would make more sense to say Myspace got popular around 2004 because late 2004 is still 2004, even if it's closer to 2005. Of course Myspace got even more popular as the mid 2000s went on, but the truth is social media in general took off in late 2004 with Myspace's popularity. www.lifewire.com/is-myspace-dead-3486012. Actually Blackberries are considered smartphones. Of course Blackberries are primitive compared to today's touchscreen smartphones, but they are still smartphones, even if they're not touch screen and require "old school keyboard for inputs." www.lifewire.com/what-is-a-blackberry-579602. I used to think iPhone is the start of the smartphone revolution, but now I think around late 2006-2008 is is the start of the smartphone revolution because of the release of the Blackberry Pearl. Blackberry Pearls, smartphones, were common in 2008. My mom got one late that year. I said, AROUND 2005. I never said exactly the moment the clock striked 12 and the year 2005 started. Search "around" in a dictionary. And I don't know why you're both getting so touchy over me saying around 2005 rather than pinpointing it to merely like 2-3 months prior like who cares its not a big deal. Move on. What makes them a smartphone and separates them from an oldschool phone then?

What makes them a smartphone and separates them from an oldschool phone then? Myspace took off in 2004, NOT 2005. Again I said that they got more popular as the mid 2000s went on, which includes 2005 and most of 2006. We're not getting touchy about it. We're just stating facts. You're the one whose making a big deal and getting touchy. Maybe you should move on. John Titor was in high school during that time. They knew what they're talking about. These are qualities that makes Blackberry Pearls smartphones: Internet connectivity. A mobile browser. The ability to sync more than one email account to a device. Embedded memory. A hardware or software-based QWERTY keyboard. Wireless synchronization with other devices, such as laptop or desktop computers. The ability to download applications and run them independently. Support for third-party applications. The ability to run multiple applications simultaneously. Touchscreen. Wi-Fi. A digital camera, typically with video capability. Gaming. Unified messaging. GPS. searchmobilecomputing.techtarget.com/definition/smartphoneOld school phones rarely have wifi access, texting, music, photos, cameras. Most old school phones are for calling. So you don't even know the definition of "around"? John Titor may have been in high school back then but I doubt you even got past elementary. Like I said, go look up the definition of "around" in google or in the dictionary. When people say around, they don't mean to the precise date of something. Like for example if someone said they got married around 2012 it doesn't neccessarily mean on that exact year. I shouldn't have to be explaining this shit to you. Holy shit... As for the smartphone thing, a lot of the features you listed below can be done on old school phones. You can game, take photos and videos, connect to the internet, and such on old phones. The BlackBerry Pearl wasn't a touchscreen which is the phone John Titor referred to.

Don’t waste your time explaining what around means to me. Of course you can do those on old school phones, but not all of them. Just because Blackberry Pearls are not touchscreen, that does not make them not a smartphone. You clearly don't know the definition of around judging by your previous comments where you think me saying "Around 2005" literally means 2005 and can't mean any years around that time. Not even a few months before the year began. >Of course you can do those on old school phones, but not all of them. Exactly. If you can do that on old school phones then what is the dividing line between an old phone and a smart phone? You say a phone not being touchscreen doesn't mean it isn't a smartphone. Then what is? What is the dividing line between the two?

2008 already felt dated by 2014. The video quality, the music styles, the economical status and the fashions of that year rapidly aged by the mid-2010s, let alone now...

What is the dividing line between the two? I know the definition of around. You clearly don’t know what you’re talking about. Blackberries are considered the earliest wave of smartphones. I mentioned earlier that you can’t do those things on ALL old school phones. Plus on old school phones, the quality isn’t as fast, strong or complex as smartphones. Old school phones are more primitive. Blackberries at the time were more advanced than phones that came out in 2003. Stop twisting my words around. We’re talking about when trends got popular. Myspace got popular in 2004, not 2005. Get your facts straight. >I know the definition of around. >"Myspace got popular around 2005" >REEEEEEEE Myspace got popular in the end of 2004, not 2005!!!! You clearly don't know the definition of around lmao. Go back and pick up a dictionary and try again. >Blackberries are considered the earliest wave of smartphones. They were before actual smartphones we know as smartphones today got popular like the Iphone > I mentioned earlier that you can’t do those things on ALL old school phones. Doesn't matter since you can still do them on some. If you can do something on an old phone that is meant to only be a smartphone thing when it isn't a smartphone thing. >Plus on old school phones, the quality isn’t as fast, strong or complex as smartphones. Old school phones are more primitive. Yes. Just like how the first Iphone is more advanced than the black berry pearl in every way. Phones evolve in speed, graphical quality, size and complexity all the time. It happens like every year. I don't see what your point is.

2008 already felt dated by 2014. The video quality, the music styles, the economical status and the fashions of that year rapidly aged by the mid-2010s, let alone now... I first noticed that that time period felt dated in the mid 10s as well.

You just contradicted yourself by saying late 2004 is way off, and trying to bully and clearly lying and manipulating people because you can't accept you are wrong. “False Myspace took off Q4 of 2004...This is what I mean when I said you are way off sometimes with start dates of trends.” I don’t see what your point is either. The third > was paraphrasing your "ACKTHUALLY IT GOT POPULAR IN THE END OF 2004 NOT 2005" point not me saying late 2004 is way off from 2005. There's three possibilities here. You're either too dumb to understand the concept of the word "around" and think that if someone mentions a year and says around that year it must mean the exact year that was mentioned or you do know but you're playing dumb for the sake of argument or you're just flat out trolling so I won't bother continuing this pointless conversation. Have a nice day.

Seinfeld literally has a joke about Blackberries in their reunion episode in 2009
January 2007 Key Note , Steve Jobs mocks the popularity of the Blackberry (Steve Jobs even calls the Blackberry Pearl a smart Phone )
Here is a review uploaded in October 2006 of the Pearl
So what I am trying to say is the Pearl was a smartphone and was getting popular.

It was considered a smartphone back then but most certainly isn't by todays standards. Just like how people considered the PS3 to have "lifelike graphics" back then but now it looks almost cartoony. The Iphone changed the definition of smartphones. When people envision a smartphone today they don't think of blackberries, they think of Iphones and Samsung Galaxy

It was considered a smartphone back then but most certainly isn't by todays standards. Just like how people considered the PS3 to have "lifelike graphics" back then but now it looks almost cartoony. It's still a smartphone regardless of public opinion of it's tech. You can't re-classify what an object is once it has been set.
Traveling on a horse and strap back may be dated but it is still a means of transportation despite, cars, taxi, uber, planes. When people think of phones today they think of cellphones, android of Iphone, even tho there is landline we still think of cell first. A Black and white TV is still a TV despite color tv, HD LED TVs, OLED Tv's. A Tv is a TV. A Typewriter is a means of writing, despite ipads, desktop computers, laptops, a means of something is a means. Steve Jobs the founder of Apple literally says Blackberry pearl is indeed a smartphone lol, there should be nothing else added. You may not like that the Blackberry Pearl is a smartphone, you may not agree with the fact.. but the fact of the matter is it's a smartphone.

Traveling on a horse and strap back may be dated but it is still a means of transportation despite, cars, taxi, uber, planes. The definition of a smartphone is an abstract thing. What defines a smartphone is how advanced it is generally. There is no official quantative measure which seperates an old school phone from a smartphone. Back then a phone like that would be seen as very advanced but nowadays we think of phones like Iphone and Samsung Galaxy and other Androids when we think of smartphones.
