Like for example the literal years of a decade are 0-9 and eras are 0-3, 4-5 and 6-9 but culturally it's different like for example the first two years of the 00s are considered in the same era as the late 90s.
In the same manner how would you define gaming eras culturally rather than literally(as in going by generations like 7th gen 2005 - 2013 or 8th gen 2013 - 2020).
IMO:
Pre 5th gen: Dunno
5th gen: 1997 - Late 2001
6th gen: Late 2001 - 2008
7th gen: 2008 - Late 2015
8th gen: Late 2014 - ongoing(9th gen hasn't truly begun yet due to console shortages and lack of next gen games)

1st gen: 1972-1976 (Peak: 1975) 2nd gen: 1977-1984 (Peak: 1982) 3rd gen: 1985-1990 (Peak: 1988) 4th gen: 1991-1995 (Peak: 1993) 5th gen: 1996-2000 (Peak: 1998) 6th gen: 2001-2006 (Peak: 2004) 7th gen: 2007-2013 (Peak: 2010) 8th gen: 2014- (Peak: 2017)
