Its hard to picture that happenning. They've dominated gaming for almost 3 decades and every other company that tries to enter the console market recently flops hard like the ouya and google stadia. Look what happened with nintendo and sega in the 90s It's not impossible Nintendo lost because they were just stubborn as hell(in fact their stubbornness is the very reason why the PS brand is even a thing) and Sega made a really stupid marketing mistake where they revealed the console like a few months before it released apparantly. Sony has always been practical and smart except for the PS3 launch. Xbox is on the verge of destruction and MS keeps dragging it deeper down the pit. Nintendo are doing very well with the switch but they don't directly compete with playstation. Which leaves alternative niche console brands like Stadia and Ouya which are almost guaranteed to flop. Sony would have to fuck up really badly for a new brand to take over.

Sony isn't even trying anymore lol, they're know they're the biggest name when it comes to homes console and everyone will buy whatever PlayStation they release Would be interesting if we had a "90s 2.0" scenario and sony falls off like what happened to nintendo/sega when the ps1 cames out Its hard to picture that happenning. They've dominated gaming for almost 3 decades and every other company that tries to enter the console market recently flops hard like the ouya and google stadia. actually when ps3 came out it flopped until 2009 lol The system did not sell, all of the former ps2 people went to Xbox 360

No need to force a new era just enjoy what’s out there. Outside of Covid, there wasn’t that much going on in 2020 including this year as well, at least compared to how things are in regular times, so it’s like we almost skipped almost an entire years worth of what could have been more potential focus and contributions to gaming advancements had it not been for Covid.

And even then all it took was a rebrand and pumping out a couple new exclusives to reclaim their throne(the PS3 actually ended up outselling the 360 by the end of 7th gen). PS4 launch absolutely nuked the Xbox brand and brought all those PS2 people back.
