Sure we had the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 and Ebola, but the early half of 2014 was the last time politics was not as divided or toxic. People were not hyper-sensitive, constantly getting offended over the tiniest stuff. This was before cancel culture and political correctness took over, influencing every aspect of pop culture and society. Trump running for president would have been laughed at since he was still known as a reality TV show host. People knew how to live and let live for the most part.
Pop culture did not seem as fragmented as today. Mid 2010s culture seemed exciting. Cable TV and the radio were still a way to watch movies, shows and listen to music. Streaming was not as huge as later, although growing.
YouTube did not have a stick up their butt by taking down videos that may be deemed "offensive." They also did not force viewers to pay to watch movies leaked on their website as the first half of 2014 was before YouTube Red.
People still looked forward to technological progress instead of shunning it. iPhones still had headphone jacks. 2014 was the last year I saw people get excited about new iPhones until maybe 2017. First half of 2014 was the last time most people did not feel the need to upgrade to a touch screen smartphone and the last time I saw a variety of phones instead of just Androids and iPhones.
7th generation gaming was still relevant with the PS3 still being played by many (my sister and myself included). 8th generation consoles like the PS4 were still expensive.
I heard about Snapchat and Instagram, but not as much as the second half of 2014. I think the early half of 2014 was the last time Facebook was semi-cool with teenagers.
Music, movies, TV, games and fashion of the time had a noticeable, upbeat, cheesy, trashy, silly early 2010s vibe. I still saw some girls at my high school sport scene looks. Angry Birds was still played by some students. Memes were goofy.

Almost everything from 2011 and 2012 was still relevant, with the exception of a number of things that were replaced with newer mid 2010s culture, a lot of which was just an tiny upgrade of what was already there. I feel like 2013-2014 is merely a beefed up and molded version of it of mid 2011-start of 2013. It wasn't until late 2014 into 2015 that a bigger chunk of early 2010s things started feeling properly separated, gone or dated.

It wasn't until late 2014 into 2015 that a bigger chunk of early 2010s things started feeling properly separated, gone or dated. Agreed and well said. People are firm in believing that all early 2010s influences died by late 2013 because that is when mid 2010s culture began to them as if there is a hard stop or a dividing line between the early and mid 2010s. I would argue early or mid 2013 for the start of mid 2010s culture. I think the earliest mid 2010s influences came around mid to late 2011 or 2012. Many early 2010s influences continued into 2014. 2013-2014 was mid 2010s culturally, but it was not a departure from or a discontinuation of 2011 and 2012 like many people make it out to be, definitely not world's apart. Late 2014 and early 2015 seemed like the true and peak mid 2010s period, but also when the earliest late 2010s influences originated. I consider late 2004 through early 2014 as one general period. 2010s culture did not flow the same way 2000s culture did. In the 2010s, all the eras seem to blend together. That was not the case in the 2000s. I don't mind grouping the 2010s like this: Late 2009 through Early 2011: Very Early 2010s Mid 2011 through 2012: Early 2010s 2013 through Mid 2014: Early to Mid 2010s Late 2014 and Early 2015: Mid 2010s Mid 2015 through 2016: Mid to Late 2010s 2017 through Mid 2018: Late 2010s Late 2018 through Early 2020: Very Late 2010s

I would say Facebook was still pretty hot with teenagers all the way until 2016 or so. Yes, Snapchat and Whatsapp were around but those were pretty niche still. Not everyone had a Snapchat, yet everyone had a Facebook account at that point so it was much more convenient to use that instead to keep contact with people.
That being said, I did not enjoy this era. Flappy bird, Ice Bucket Challenge, Minions, #Hashtags everywhere, twerking... Pop culture was pretty dumb and lowbrow around this time. 2015 was an improvement over this year IMO.
