Throughout the mid to late 2000s, I saw many teenagers with iPods. Even in the early 2010s until around 2013 or 2014, I saw some of my high school classmates with them. By that point, I saw mainly iPod touches. After 2013 or sometime in 2014, I haven’t seen them.
I assume they are no longer popular as now people use their touch screen smartphones to listen to music. I’m surprised to see Apple still advertise their iPod touches. I foresee Apple completely discontinuing all their iPod models. iPods may officially go the way of Discmans, cassettes, CD players, VHS, etc.

I guess they went the way of Discmans, cassettes, CD players, VHS, etc. I wonder if iPods will ever come back because of 2000s nostalgia. I think they are still being made, the ipod touch models, and there is market for them, although the more recent smartphones killed off of the popularity around a decade ago. I think the early 2004-2007 models will have a comeback in a maybe later in the decade when they become old school enough. I don't remember the 2001-2003 models catching on, plus they were big.

I wonder how much the original 2001 models go for.. Probably insane prices.

I thought so too because I still see them being advertised. I may have seen an iPod section on Apple's website. I think iPods were a novelty from the time of their release around late 2001 through mid 2004. Yeah, you started seeing more and more people getting them around spring into summer 2004, maybe even a few major ad campaigns I'm not sure to be honest but something like around that time or a bit late, mid summer 2004 they were a somewhat popular, late summer ipods were already quite big.

The whole point of iPods was to carry around your MP3s in a small device back when iTunes was huge. Since the streaming era, they pretty much became the new Floppy Disks.
The only reason iPod Touches are still sold is because they offer most of the services of an iPhone at a cheaper price, which makes them have a niche appeal still. But I don't think they're sold much, since they're only available on their website and haven't received a new version in years.

Why carry an iPod with you when you can listen to music on your phone, which you can also use to go online, text, take pictures, etc etc.

Honestly surprised it took this long It should've been discontinued in the mid 10s, by that point it was pretty clear the ship had already sailed away for music players

The iPod wasn't a complete obsolete product back then. The late 10s slowly saw the discontinuation of iPod products anyway. And like I said the iPod Touch still had a niche appeal as a cheaper alternative to the iPhone, but the neglect and low sales finally got it now I guess.

MP3 players were completely dead by that point. They kept the iPod Touch around because it’s basically a slimmed down iPhone anyway, and there was still a market for it.
