I think they did to the point the youth found rock lame. I have hope rock will recover in the 2020s because of Olivia Rodrigo and MGK. I recall Billie Eilish was being touted as the savior of rock music in 2019. That aged terribly lol.

That aged terribly lol. it did at the time, you have to remember by 2009 almost every pop punk act was trying to be faux dance electropop or uptempo, rock just died out. Was not until 2020 when MGK's album came you heard pop punk on the radio again. Example of a pop punk band trying to be more uptempo and pop in 2009, tons of management for pop punk bands also wanted Disney features ( I kid you not)... several management players told me this when I was E! Also remember Disney channel was doing their own version of teen pop punk/pop rock circa 06-2009 which killed the vibe even more lol

Those 2000s pop punk acts were trying to cash in on the early 2010s electropop craze. I think their albums around that time did terribly and lost fans. They probably got backlash. Oh no! Disney features! That’s terrible! I remember that 2006-2009 Disney phase. Yuck! They totally killed the vibe more lol. I guess that’s when rock and punk music started to get long in the tooth. Rock music is supposed to be angry, angsty and edgy. Disney never comes to my mind when I think of those qualities. I guess that makes sense because emo started declining in Q4 2006. I’ve noticed edge coming back into 2020s music charts. The 2010s were soft musically. Rock was alive and well in 2009-2010 and to some extent early 2011. There were many popular rock subgenres by 2009. Personally I think most mainstream rock music from late 2004-2011 was watered down. Compared to 90s and early 2000s. I remember emo declining at some point 2008. It was mostly the same in 2006-2007 as a bit earlier, even 2007-2008 it was the same to some extent. You started to see indie replace traditional rock around 2011-2012 and less popularity in a mainstream way but it was never entirely gone. Metal music had much more exposure in the 2010s than earlier with celebrities wearing Metallica t-shirts and metal music having much more accessibility and presence in online culture than ever.

You didn't see it in music videos and other than the small tumble niche there was not an online outlet for it at the time. Live Journal may have still been around in it's classic form but I am pretty sure it's traffic evaporated by that point along with myspace. When I think of rock in 2010 I think of terrible Daugherty type clones and indie slowly replacing it

Scene was just hanging but fading out in 2010, true, I consider style emulation post zeitgeist still relevant imo, Emo was fading from mid 2008 to early 2009, but still visible , even if less, a few years after and harder rock metalcore, post hardcore, screamo and related genres were still popular and metal/rock in pop culture were still relevant with guitar hero, lingering gothic aesthetics with brands like Emily the strange and hot topic being somewhat still popular, and mainstream rock icons being “cool” ( AC DC, Beatles, ramones and Motörhead ) in fast fashion, media and online culture. Also hardcore punk and metal revival started in mid to late 2004 (underground and online) had an active and strong presence between late 2009 and early 2011 and to some extent the early 2010s. But I think late 2011-2012 and 2013 included is when 2010s indie, in a mainstream sense, along with 2010s hipster culture, which started in late 2009, replaced off a big chunk of lingering rock and the style influences which were already fading out. The again you have tumblr microgenres like sea punk but that wasn’t really rock oriented music. Maybe the style to some degree.

There was like this mini stop gap from late 2009 to late 2011/early 2012 where hipster music was starting to catch up as the late 2000s influences were running out of breath and lost the "culture" 400 yard dash. By 2012 it was clear of what was happening, Hipster fonts on commercials started popping up around 2012 as well. As for the gothic aesthetic, Alice in Wonderland in 2010 was like the final swan song.

Yeah I think by late 2009 the hipster style was clear, latter 2010 the 10s hipster identity/aesthetics/attitude was full circle, mid 2011 it was more mainstream, 2012 it was in your face everywhere, 2013-2014 it was cringe, a common look and more cookie cutter
