I'm mainly focusing on the 1990s and 2000s.
D'Angelo - "Brown Sugar" (1995)
Erykah Badu - "Didn't Cha Know" (2000)
Guru - "Keep Your Worries" (2000) - I'm unsure if this counts.
Musiq Soulchild - "Girl Next Door" (2000)
Angie Stone - "I Wanna Thank Ya" (2004)
How long did this trend in R&B last? Did this extend into hip-hop/rap music?
I think it started around 1993-1997, peaked from 1998-2002 and faded around 2003-2007. I think it extended a little bit into rap/hip-hop music.
I believe this sound is underrated and it would've been cool if it was explored more.
