How common would you say smartphones were in the late 00s? Surprisingly, most statistics agree that a smartphone was still a uncommon sight by even 2009.   So yeah, in this case the jump from 2009 to 2014 was a far bigger one than 2004 to 2009.

They became common around 2011-12. I would say the era of the smartphone began in like 2013 when Instagram and Snapchat and app culture was all mainstream or solidified.
