Some say it started in 2008, others say it started in 2013. What do you guys think?
As for me, i'd say 2011 since that's when I started constantly seeing Iphones popping up and being talked about. Before you had lots of feature phones with outdated designs and keyboards. I can't really remember seeing an iphone before 2011 in real life.

Shadow realm stage - 2006 (debut of Blackberry Pearl) - 2007 (debut of Iphone) 2008 ( debut of Android)
official kick off - 2011
*by the way Blackberry pearls were getting very popular in 2006, Steve Jobs even ranted about it in his January 2007 Apple Keynote, and yes iphones were being spotted in the mainstream from 07-2010 but the adoption rare was smaller. When I was at E! news I would see iphones all the time on the way to work. This was summer 2009. During January 2007's keynote Jobs rants about the popularity of smartphones including the newly released Blackberry pearl

I would definitely say around 2011 but in 2013, it was a must to have one.

Steve jobs isn't god. As i've mentioned on a previous thread the meaning of "smartphones" has changed over time. Those phones are considered feature phones nowadays.

The Blackberry pearl is a smartphone, just because we use touch screen iphone like devices does not change that the Blackberry pearl classification is. It is a smart phone period.

Smartphones technically already existed in the mid-2000s, they had keyboards instead but they were A) very expensive and user-unfriendly B) mostly targeted at businesspeople. The iPhone desacralized the concept by making it much more accessible to the general public. Still, it took a few years for them to catch on the feature phone market. Around 2011, smartphones' sales started to match those of feature phones. And by 2013, most people had a smartphone at that point. It also helped that 3G, Wifi and then 4G improved drastically over those years.

I would say 39% of people had smartphones in the late 2000s, by 2009 maybe 41%
