2012 was an explosive year for hip hop. Trap was fully in the mainstream by this year and most of it sounds very different than rap music from 2010 and 2011. 2012 was when the 2010s sound was really defined.
I can't believe these songs will turn 10 next year:

I grew up with rap in the 2000s but 2012 was when I really started to regularly listen to rap on a daily basis. These songs take me back to my very early teen years when trap was becoming the dominant sound in hip hop. Probably haven’t heard these songs since the mid 10s but still know all the lyrics. Rap has definitely evolved since then

Rap has definitely evolved since then rap definitely evolved but IMO the difference between 2012 and the early 2000s is a lot bigger. Compare Ja Rule, Nelly and 50 Cent to this for example.

I think most of 2010 hip hop still sounded late 2000s like, because most of it was pre trap. I’d say Q4 2010 and 2011 were building up to the trap sound that became dominant in 2012. True Some 2011 Trap: Definitely see how this builds up to 2012.
