You can list movies, books, TV shows, music, video games, politics, economy, social media, technology, internet, anything.
To me, movies such as “The Hunger Games,” “The Hobbit,” “21 Jump Street,” “Ted,” “Avengers,” and “The Amazing Spider Man” define core 2010s movies all of which debuted in 2012.
I believe Instagram blew up and touch screen smartphones blew up in late 2012.
I’m sure a lot of things were headed or pointed towards the core 2010s culture sometime in 2011, but I feel as if 2012 solidified that more.
George Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin in 2012 which planted the seed for the toxic politics of the mid 2010s to present day.
Electro-pop music started to decline in late 2011-2012 woth a slow shift towards teen and indie pop or rock.
I don’t understand why 2012 is separated from 2013 and 2014, especially if a lot or some of the culture of that year was headed away from the early 2010s into the mid 2010s. The early 2010s have more in common with the mid 2010s than the late 2000s imo. 2012 was not peak early 2010s like 2011. 2012 isn’t to the early 2010s like what 2002 was to the early 2000s.

Eh, more like late 2011. I start hearing about Instagram in spring of 2012. If you look at the Tea Party protests in 2010, it doesn't feel all that different from today's republicans. I see the entire 2012 as leaning core 2010s, second half of 2011 as well in some ways.

Hipster coffee shop wit lightbulb and Mustache man Now I have to take a shower now Lol. I’m sure 2009 and 2010, maybe even earlier were headed in that direction, but the music that was coming out in 2010 and 2011 like Black Keys, Fitz and Tantrum and Pumped Up Kicks screams “hipster coffee shop with lightbulb and mustache man.” I threw up lol I hope we NEVER have to go thru that time period again, grateful we escaped!
