I feel like movies from 2015 or 2016 to present have to meet a check list: -Must have x number of characters from different racial, ethic, and religious backgrounds, of different sexual orientations and gender identities -Must be politically correct. -Must portray characters in a positive light. -Must have a political and moral message. -Must have family values. -Must be an idea that was done before that way people can like the movie or TV show. (No wonder why we get shitty ass sequels and reboots murdering classic movies and TV shows from the 2000s and back.) -Cannot be an original or cutting-edge idea because what if no one likes the movie or TV show and people get offended.
I'm no racist or bigot. I'm not against LGBTQ+. I believe in equality for all. However if movies have the sole purpose of some, most or all of the bullet points I listed above and nothing else, then all that seems forced and fake. Those bullets I listed must come naturally.

I think the biggest problem is not working on pushing the envelope but relying too on nostalgia, 10 second visuals, getting comfortable half assing the story because there aren't bad enough consequences if they mess up if they can get away with it (Steven Spielberg and George Lucas had bigger egos and reputation to protect in the 80s) and and pandering to groups beyond the norm. They also need to treat the movie format with more respect instead of it being an advertisement or an empty attention grabber. I think streaming technology and digital technlogy has lowered the value of movie format as well because films aren't seen a special treat as much, or treated with as much respect like they were in the past but rather a cheap and commom medium, you can record a movie with your phone in perfect resolution, we watch videos all day long, and we are overexposed to watching video content etc it wasn't like that in the past.
People need to look at what made movies so good in the past and focus on that, I think they tried doing that with star wars: the force awakens in 2015 as an example but they ended up half assing the movie with the some of the issues mentioned above I think applies with Mad Max as well.
I honestly think the Aladdin and Lion Kings films that came out in 2019 are one of the rare examples of good movies that actually successfully and accurately tried to capture what made those movies good in the first place but in a modern way. You occasionally see really good independent movies that do this as well.
But a large amount of action, superhero, rom-com, disney/kids animation, horror etc movies from the mid to late 2000s till now suffer from this corporate laziness and mediocre and greedy approach to making films, but there are always exceptions, for some reason 2008-2009 and 2010 to some extent saw a lot of exceptions to this. I would like to see more films with the approach that they had with Aladdin, the dark knight etc I hope this next decade with improve superhero movies and kill off horrible trends of the past.
I have a feeling the cinema may reach an even lower point and it might come back stronger.

I have a feeling the cinema may reach an even lower point and it might come back stronger. Well said. I believe movie creators want to be safe (use nostalgia) and not take risks (try new ideas). Most movies, especially superhero ones, feel like soulless and cheap advertisements to buy their merchandise. This feeds the excessive materialistic culture of today, which I believe is worse than in the 2000s. If movie creators should focus on anything from the past, it’s what made movies memorable, quotable, fun, a thrill ride and or entertaining to watch, not rehashing ideas just for old time sake. Plus now people can access old movies on any streaming platform. Watching a movie through streaming doesn’t compare or come close or is exciting as popping in a VHS or DVD from Blockbuster. Advanced technology has lowered the quality of movies. Now we have access to so much content. Like you mentioned, the respect of movies has diminished. It’s true that creating movies through phones are easy. Some or many of today’s movies are shot on phones. I agree on “Aladdin” and “Lion King” movies from 2019. They captured the true spirits of the original versions, but with a dash of contemporary flair. Independent movies seem to fare well better today than large companies like Hollywood. You have a point on all the bad aspects of movies being traced back to the mid 2000s with laziness and greed. I’d also like to see more films with the approach on “Aladdin.” I think that would be cool. I also hope for the best in the movie industry and all the crap trends die out. Honestly I too seeing it get worse before we see another renaissance.

We need that kind of artistry to be standard formula alongside the examples I mentioned, I hope cinema gets better this decade, I still haven't watched ghostbusters and spiderman, I wonder how they turned out.

-Must have x number of characters from different racial, ethic, and religious backgrounds, of different sexual orientations and gender identities No matter how many precautionary notes you make, including this as a bad point for any movie to adhere to is pure bigotry.

Pretty sure the Last Jedi flopped for the reason OP stated In what universe the last jedi flopped? It was a huge block buster and made a crap ton of money Y'all really live in wonderland "The Last Jedi was a commercial flop because it irreparably damaged the continued revenues of the franchise (Solo, Rise of Skywalker and Kenobi) between 50% and 100%" google

I'm big on TV and there's plenty of good shows that came out in the past 6-7 years. This is based on shows I've watched and shows I've heard good things about.
-Fargo (2014-now) -Better Call Saul (2015-now) -Narcos (2015-2017) -Stranger Things (2016-now) -Westworld (2016-now) -Ozark (2017-now) -Dark (2017-now) -Succession (2018-now) -The Mandalorian (2019-now) -Squid Game (2021-now)
This is just off the top of my head.

To clarify my original post: I get the vibe from a lot of 2015 or 2016 to present movies and TV shows are that their main goal is trying to push a political message when they should entertain. Again not all movies and TV that came out since then are like that. Some of them are genuinely funny and entertaining like "Fresh off the Boat," "Family Reunion" and "The Carmichael Show."
As I said earlier, I am all for people of all races, religions, LGBTQ+, sexual orientations, etc to be the main characters in movies, but when movie creators have that as the sole purpose and nothing else, then the movie seems fake, forced, ingenuine and they're doing it just for show.
